The Broadway Bloodbath Continues...#1
Posted: 11/7/08 at 4:52pm
Another one bites the dust this Sunday, the dull and tedious 'A Tale Of Two Cities' is Broadway's latest casualty. Originally posted as closing on November 16th the producers have pulled the plug a week early. What's the point in throwing cash from the back of the balcony when your playing to houses of no more than 40/45%.
There's not much left to close over there at the moment. The New Year is bringing in some great new productions so its not all doom and gloom in New York.
That being said, it's comforting at the moment to see the good old West End doing good business with no credit crunch closures announced...so far!

I was in New York last week and I absolutely loved A Tale Of Two Cities - such a beautiful score and James Barbour was aweseome. I'm so glad I got to see it before it closed. I also saw "13" which was one the best shows I've seen in 2008 - I hope that doesn't suffer the same fate!

I think '13' will be gone within a few weeks, its grosses are not good at all, though it will be far cheaper than Tale to run

I know this production has been detested, but also some people have seen a genius to this too!

I always find it kind of sad for the creative team when a show closes very early, the team must put years of work in the production,it is then scrutinised by critics that are like vultures and really just looking for absolute perfection, sometimes very unfairly. But what for to go in the dustbin after a couple of months, this must be so hurtful for everyone that puts such hard work in, then the reality that the show will do nothing for ever, just be another statistic, because of human whim, which is driven by Brantley, Barnes< Segal etc.

So very heartbreaking and unfair, when a dream and aspiration comes reality!

What's causing them to lose money? High rents for the theatre?

*I mean, the economic recession...aside

The vitesse of these shows closing are starting to scare me. And now Young Frankenstein - did it even recoup? Snubbed for Tonys and now a financial flop? This must be too much for Mel Brooks' ego.

Any casualties possible for the West End front? Imagine this...aside?

Shocked to hear this is closing as really enjoyed the show, when I saw it in 2007, I really enjoyed the show. I even planned to see Frankenstein again when I go over in the New Year.

However I can also say good ridance for not publishing there figures in weekly gross!

I loved the show even with its faults- what show theses days or any day doesn't have them.
Just a good old fashioned Broadway musical comedy.
They will lose millions and millions but the show will always be remembered because it ran, it ran for over a year and played to nearly 600 performances- that will always see it in the middle to top of the list of long running shows.
I am now gonna try and see this the first week in December one last time if I can find a slot.

I hardly think this is anything shameful for the show, when you think how many other productions are closing- including the multi-award winning Spring Awakening!

I would have thought it was quite close to recouping. I actually wouldn't be surprised if Mel B kept it quiet due to the attacks he has had. I also think it will have a decent life on the road.

I was not aware that Mel Brooks had personal attacks on him?
te
If Young Frankenstein came out before The Producers, it would of done very well, I think The producers set the bar very high!

I wonder if Young Frankenstein will come to the West End?

Be good if you PM me please.

I imagine it would be a shrewd move to bring it over, as the set is very vast especially Frankenstein Lab and it would not be possible to tour with this and the overheads to bring the show to London would be minimal and I guess it could easily do a two year run, fingers crossed.

Just thinking of the true state of Broadway musicals.

Theatres available.

Jacobs
Belasco
Circle in the Square
Music Box????? (poor gross 53.1%, mean closure of Osage County)
Longacre???? (poor gross 56.2%, mean closure of Boeing Boeing)
Atkinson???? (poor gross 63.7%, mean closure of Grease)
St James
Neil Simon
Palace (West Side Story, limited run)
New Amsterdam (poor gross 68%, mean closure of Mary Poppins)
Shubert (Play (Blithe Spirit) coming in, but plays do not last long.)
O'Neill
Cort (poor gross 45.2%, mean closure of 39 steps, confirmed)
Majestic (poor gross 62.6%, mean closure of Phantom, you know Broadway is in trouble if this tourist attrection shuts).
Helen Hayes
Walter Kerr

Could it be possible to walk down the Great White Way and see theatres dark? I for one would hate to see that day!

WSS wont be a limited run, you also have to remember quite a bit is on its way in Hair, Vanities, 9 to 5 to name but a few

I do however think some theatre will stand empty for 4 or 5 months

There are some shows on your list that aren't going anywhere so fast.

39 steps is closing but it is moving to The Helen Hays after Slava's Snowshow is done there. There is a Will Farrel one man show going into the court.
