So The Lion King is going to go to Vegas and replace Mamma Mia at the Mandalay Bay resort. I wonder if that by doing this Vegas is going to try another go at the whole "family friend" image.

I'm surprised they didn't just build a new theatre for it!
I can picture it now - all the seats in leopard and zebra skin. Classy! Tasteful! Vegas!

Call me tacky, but animal print theatre seats sounds AWESOME.

In context of course.

Slash, TLK is a perfect show for Vegas considering how well the Cirque Du Soliel shows go down.

I had a friend in JUBILEE, she did it for two years. The wonderful Bob Mackie designed the costumes.

People on the Broadway board are wondering if Vegas is considering bring back the whole family image thing considering that the usual influx of tourists has gone down a large amount and that The Lion King would be a very family friendly show.

Interestingly enough, I have cousins who lived in Vegas for a few years. They said that most people who live in Vegas don't really do things on the strip. Every so often they would go to the strip to go out for a nice dinner. But, it's not like they would go gamble or see shows a lot. My cousin found it interesting that in NYC for example there are locals who do go see Broadway shows. But, that isn't really the case in Vegas.

re: So Vegas gets a new Broadway show

I didn't know it was possible to get a 'nice dinner' on the strip! Post evidence! lol

The costumes for 'Jubilee' have to be seen to be believed. They draw gasps of astonishment at every number on stage- incredible!
I've seen 'Jubilee' 6 times now and when ever I'm there I will always try to see to again no matter what else I want to see. (great, they always do a late show at 10.30pm)
"Jubilee' is the old Vegas. Showgirls, huge sets, massive production numbers! WOW!
Supposedly Bette Midler cried!

I hate the seats at mandalay bay, they tip back to a strange angle and many are broken and tip too far leaving you looking up the skirt of the woman behind. Leicester sq odeon has animal print seats, they be ace.

Every time the Odeon Leicester Sq puts in new seats they send the old ones to another theatre in the chain. Up until it closed in 1998 the Odeon in Swansea always got them first.
Maybe they don't do it any more what with so many of the big, gorgeous, one screen cinemas now closed and demolished!

MamasDoin'Fine, with regards to getting a good diner on the strip. There are a lot of five star restaurants.

Winston I've done the strip 100s of times (no funny comments please!) and yes there are 100s of restaurants but not too many that are more than 3 or stars! Some of the biggies like The Belagio etc have amazing restaurants but I cant see the local Las Vegas dwellers going to such places for dinner! Some of the hotel buffets are pretty disastrous- mind, what did I expect for $5.99?
Gordon Ramsey is opening a new restaurant on the strip to be called the 'Eat It And F*** Off' -its not 5 star- just two fingers!

I think thet are trying to build another major theatre scene in Vegas, but with such high profile closures such as Spamalot, The Producers and Mama Mia, it ain't going to happen, however I am mystified why Soliel shows do the business and the mentioned shows do. However I do agree with Winston that locals do not go to the shows and guess it is the British that brings the bucks in, as WWRY played there so long and no one else.

Mentioned on this thread about gorgeous 1 screen cinemas.

Think Vegas could be the place to launch multiplex theatres, have a choice of 8 stages, then you could have more than lion effect seats, you could have zebra, leopard, rattlesnake, giraffe etc. Would this be brilliant.

I think the reason why Vegas hasn't become Broadway's west coast counterpart is because when people think of Vegas shows they tend to think of Cirque shows and those types of shows and Blue Man Group etc. But, they associate musicals with Broadway. I guess just like a tourist wouldn't want to see a Cirque type show in NYC because they could see a Broadway musical which sounds more appealing the same could be said for Vegas. Why would they want to see a Broadway show when they could see something that is flashier like Cirque or many of the other high spectical Vegas shows.
