WWRY to Broadway?#1

It's been pretty successful here in the West End, so my question to you lovely people is why it hasn't ventured over to Broadway yet, or made plans to go over at least?

They have more success over their with juke box musicals do they not...and a 'Queen' show is a no brainer surely?

Potential for an awesome cast too, with Galalio/Scaramouche/Killer Queen/Meat/Britney etc.

Maybe Kerry could reprise her role as Meat for Broadway...doubt she would, but I'm watching her do 'I Want It All' on YouTube and it's making me miss the good times of her rocking out on stage.

re: WWRY to Broadway?

They have taste!

Its one of the most successful shows to play Canada in many years- after the flops recently of 'Hairspray', 'The Producers' etc. Its Just reopend for its second season in an open run playing a slightly smaller theatre in Toronto than last year.

A young actress with Noel coward after a dreadful opening night performance said to him 'Well, i knew my lines backwards this morning!'' Noels fast reply was ''Yes dear, and thats exactly how you said them tonight'!'

They didn't take to Hairspray?! Thats a bit bizarre.

Didn't think Canada was that different from their USA 'pals'. Go figure.

How come they opened in Toronto and Vegas and not Broadway/Off-Broadway? Would it not have been a safer bet because theres wayyyyy more tourists/naive theatre goers in NYC?

Vegas and Broadway audiences are different like night and day. I am not sure why this hasn't gone to Broadway yet either with the recent surge of jukebox musicals.

But, I remember there being a comment on the Broadway board around the time that Hairspray said that it was going to open in London. The comment was was that if it was a smart move or not. Considering that Hairspray's first international production was in Toronto and it didn't do well there. The question was if it didn't do well in Toronto would it do well in London. I think it was a reasonable question to ask in that time. But, now it is clear that things are different and that they have changed because of how successful Hairspray is in London.

Lucky thing that the West End is actually like uber-cultured and pro-theatre, whereas Toronto is like...well, not.

Blame Canada.

I still think WWRY should have a go at Broadway, if they made a bigger deal out of it being QUEEN music...maybe vamp it up? It's got quite a lot of cultural references that can be updated/appreciated by the tourists because they aren't like 'you have to know theatre to get this joke'.

Go'annn, go'annn, GO AN. as Mrs Doyle would say.

What could possibly go wrong? *eyes are definitely rolling*.

I would like to see it. I do think that it would make sense to bring it to Broadway because we have had a surge of Jukebox musicals like I said. I don't see any difference between this Jukebox musical as oppose to Mamma Mia, All Shook Up Movin out etc etc.

I think that the producers are using the audiences in Vegas as their reason for not bringing the show to Broadway. If that is in fact what they are doing then they have to realize that that is a stupid thing to do. The last Broadway musical in Vegas to be successful was Phantom. Everything else just bombed. I remember that We Will Rock You in Vegas started out being its regular length. But,then due to poor ticket sales they thought that if they would cut the length of the show that more people would come. So, they cut it to 90 min. And, that still didn't work. My hunch is that they feel like they tried it in America once and it didn't work so there is not a good reason that they can think of that they should try it again in America. I think they don't realize that Broadway audience are VERY different from those in Vegas and vise versa.

I saw it in vegas, the book was been altered for the location(I wont see it here so dont know for sure) and was dire but the theatre was fairly full. Musicals dont seem to last long in vegas, hairspray wasnt open that long and mamma mia and spamalot were near to closing when I was last out there.

This may sound naive, but why are they putting so much effort into putting shows in Las Vegas?

It's like a wacky tacky gambling theme park, not a cultured city renowned for shows.

They surely can't judge the popularity of a show based on what people in Las Vegas want to see. If they want a show there, they would go see Celine Dion/Whoever has replaced her show.

Plus they would surely take in the fact that WWRY has been playing 5/6 years in the West End?

Bizarre. I'd say that the songs in WWRY fit the show a lot more than Mamma Mia, because Queen have far more hits, and used them as well as lesser known songs that really work together. If they did vamp it up a bit, make it more of a spectacle then surely it would be perfectly fine?

It's so annoying when shows just don't happen, while total rubbish gets thrown on stage elsewhere.

Toanythingtaboo, I agree with you about putting shows in Vegas. The only reason why Phantom is doing well there is because they were able to fancy up the specticals on that stage to catch the eye of Vegas audiences.

Mamma Mia is still playing at Mandalay Bay Resort. There was talk of it closing, But, it recently announced an indefnint run. It's not going anywhere anytime soon.

Anything that plays Vegas is knocked down to 90mins or less.

Wickedboy not true. There were some Broadway shows that have played at full length in Vegas. Chicago was one of those show. Same for Starlight Express. Mamma Mia never had to cut its run time for Vegas audiences. It is the same length the show is on Broadway or London.

I SAID THAT LIGHTLY. ITS A WELL KNOWN FACT THAT SHOWS ARE CUT AS MUCH AS POSS ON THE INSTRUCTION OF THE CASINO OWNERS- THEY WANT THEM GAMBLING NOT SITTING IN A THEATRE FROR 2HR 30MINS.
THE PRODUCTIONS THAT PLAY VEGAS AND ARE FULL LENGH ARE THE US TOURING PRODUCTIONS NOT THE PURPOSELY STAGED ONES FOR VEGAS!!!!

Winston: Actually Starlight Express was cut to 90 minutes for Vegas. The Mexican and subsequent US touring productions took the Vegas script and then added bits back in, which is why songs like "Girls Rolling Stock" are gone.

Wickedboy two things. First off calm down. Secondly, there is a company of Mamma Mia that only plays Vegas, not a tour a Vegas sit down production that is full length.

Yes, most shows in Vegas are cut down. But, there have been shows that have been staged in Vegas that remained at full length.

But, it isn't fair to say that it happens for all shows.

i certainly thought that that was the done thing in vegas, to have a 90minute show without an interval, obviously there are exceptions but i thought it was pretty much standard stuff in vegas when it came to musicals..?

It's not just Broadway musicals that are cut down that short. All shows in Vegas are that length or around there.
