Always - The Edward & Mrs Simpson Musical#1
Posted: 2/17/08 at 12:41pm

A friend of mine reminded me of this show yesterday that we saw in previews back in 1997. I had totally forgotten about it, but remember be slightlu impressed by the look of it, even if the score was pretty abysmal.

One scene that always stick in my mind was a musical mumber based around a carousel with Sheila Ferguson giving it her all being surrounded by dancers dressed up as carousel horses. This jaw droppingly bad scene was only made worse when a couple of the horses nearly fell into the orchestra.

The only saving grace was that i didnt have to buy a ticket.
Any else see it or any other extremely short lived shows.

re: Always - The Edward & Mrs Simpson Musical

'Loves Carousel' was the big number. The show looked stunning but yes, it was so dreary. A musical abvout the abdication and Edward and Mrs Simpson!!! It lasted just 3 weeks at the Victoria Palace. It was Cilla Blacks first venture in to producing shows... and her last!
Cheekily known in the theatre world as 'Always-The musical with Wings'

Oh WickedBoy2 - yes, this musical with wings...I forgotten about this.

I remember the launch. I actually quite liked it! Shiela Ferguson was in the show wasn't she?

Thanks Wickboy2, but i think i'll pass on the CD. I cant believe the shows that get a cast recording, when other better shows dont even get a look in.

Oh you would be surprised at the number of CDs and LPs i have of shows that flopped both in the States and here. Im guessing at maybe 200/ 300. Maybe i should index them like that!

re: Always - The Edward & Mrs Simpson Musical

Heres a classic flop favorite of mine that got put on CD in a brilliantly produced recording.
'The Fields Of Ambosia'
Aldwych Theatre 1996 22 perfrormances.
It was the story of a traveling executioner with his own electric chair. The audience were famed for not being able to hold back the giggles every night. Bill Kenwright was seen being told off for laughing in the stalls one night. The most jaw dropping moment was when a lead character, after being savagely male raped, sang a number called 'If It Aint One Thing Its Another!'
Yes, its all on CD folks!
( SADM2- there's a whole new thread in here for me -whatcha think?)

Being as 'Carrie' is considered one of the biggest flops ever i'm gonna name the flops thread ''Oh Dear! What A 'Carrie' On'' - In memory of one the UK's greatest ever theatre critics, the late jack Tinker. When he reviewed 'Carrie' in Stratford that was his reviews headline the following day! Seldom bettered i think.

Yes! Fields of Ambrosia....hilarious! I remember sitting in the audience with industry folk...we were rolling in the aisles.

Remember The Secret Garden that was a disaster for The Adlwych too
