West End theater souvenir question.#1
Posted: 11/22/07 at 10:24pm
My girlfriend is going to London for Christmas and I've asked her if she could pick up a couple of posters for me -- what's the protocol for buying windowcards? Can you go into the theater outside showtime in order to buy souvenirs?

No, is the answer, souvenir booths open 30 minutes before curtain up, by which time you need a ticket to enter the building, however she could go to the shop, Dress Circle, who stock ALMOST every musical merchendise, espicially Posters, how well does she know London, as I could explain where it is and it means nothing, does she know locations of any theatres?

I dont know, they have a fair old bit, but if I were you I would just order from Dress Circle's website, where they have more items than they do in store anyway as they can order some things in specially.

Basically if you just want, what shall we call them?- the big 10! -then thats all youll get in Dress Circle. When the shop first opened (then called 'Thats Entertainment') it was very specialist but today you will only find the big commercial shows there. Buying them in Dress Circle will mean you get them wrapped properly so they wont get damaged where as in the theatre they just throw them in a bag with the show advertising on it! Im sure Dress Circle just have about 10 or 15 there when i was there 2 days ago and some of them were Broadway (i was given the programe for 'Lestat' as they didnt have them in San Francisco) I have no idea how much they charge for these these days but i know in NY there can be a difference of as much as 5 to 10 if you buy at a shop rather than a theatre. I saw 'Curtains' in previews and was told the brochure would be $12 when it was published. When i returned a few months later i couldnt get to the theatre so bought it in Shubert Alley, the main shop there- it cast me$20!!! Rip off or what.

When i went to London in June i went and bought a poster from The Drowsy Chaperone and they got someone to come downstairs to sell it to me. They seemed quite happy about it to be honest.

Dress Circle tend to have the big shows and the leftovers. They had so many 'On The Town' posters when I went in.

You don't necessarily need a ticket to enter the theatre to buy merchandise, I've happily wandered into theatres and picked stuff up before leaving. It's not like Broadway where you go through the door and BAM you're in the auditorium, there's a whole great foyer as well, and the merchandise is never much further in than the box office.

Like others, I've never had a problem with wandering to the foyer - sometimes I've been able to buy things at the ticket office (if they're quiet), or have come back just before curtain and gone to the kiosks. Ebay is also a great for sourcing some of the older posters - obviously prices vary, but that's how I've built my collection up re: West End theater souvenir question.
