I'm afraid I haven't heard anything about his replacement. If you keep an eye on the RUG site that'll probably tell you.

Has the box office of the stage musical been helped by the release of the movie? This happened to CHICAGO.

Does it even need any help? I understand the show is doing great in London. The movie did boost the ticket sales on B-way a bit I think.

Matthew Cammelle has been the standby Phantom. I had the pleasure of seeing him play the role in October when JOJ was off. Mr. Cammelle's singing sent a shiver up my spine, and he brought me thisclose to tears by the end of the show. If he takes over, I suspect I will be visiting London again to see him in the role a second time.

A "geezer" he certainly isn't.

Matt Cammelle is an AMAZING singer/actor. He also played Raoul in PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, Arnaud in MARTIN GUERRE (he's on the 1999 cd of that show) and is on the LES MISERABLES 10TH ANNIVERSARY CONCERT dvd as Feuilly (he starts Drink With Me) and has performed in several concerts and tours around the country. He has also sung the role of Marius in LES MIS (not sure whether that was just in concert or in the show), played Young Buddy in FOLLIES, and been in ASPECTS OF LOVE (I assume as Alex). Sadly, he doesn't appear to have an official website (maybe if I see him in Phantom I should suggest I runone for him re: phantom of the opera ), but a little googling can go a long way.

Fleur, I would like to point out that how 'famous' an actor is has NOTHING to do with their talent *cough-PeterAndre-cough*.

My my. Someone doesn't like being told they're wrong, do they?

At the end of the day, TALENT puts bums on seats. Stars can only keep a show running for so long. Caprice didn't keep RENT open, Jon Lee had to prove himself in Les Mis (a show which has been going longer than most of the "stars" who've been in it!), and even with the big name musicals stars who have the talent for the show, the fans can only support a show for so long before their bank balance and their enthusiasm begin to wear thin. ALL shows need the support of the general public as well as the star's fans.

Stars are usually used for a short-term boost only, normally to promote an unknown or risky show. In a show which has been running as long as POTO has, there is no need for a "star name" - the show itself draws people in. It is one of the tourist "must-sees" along with Les Miserables. And with the added promotion of the film as well, what makes you think it needs bums on seats? It is hardly struggling to sell tickets.
