Looking good!

Also does anyone have any memories of the 1979 production at the Phoenix? Was speaking to a tutor at college who was in the original production and would be interested to know if anyone saw it and what you thought of it.

It is wonderful- but a little lacking in humour. Is that the problem?

PS Meow Meow is fantastic in cabaret- how was she?

This looks a million times more lively than the original London production a few decades ago.
May give this a go next Thursday.

I'm moving to London from the US in a few months, and am waiting to hear your reports, all! Then I'll make a booking. :)
How to properly use its/it's: Its is the possessive. It's is the contraction for it is...

I only just realized you were talking about the matinee of the original production. I can't imagine this show will be boring.

And I'll just take the opportunity again to say how much I love Meow Meow! her cabaret is the funniest thing I've seen in years.

She is a fantastic multi-lingual cabaret artiste, who comes from Australia, I think.

I have seen 2 of her Edinburgh shows and they are hilarious deconstructions of cabaret lore. She manages to balance parody and a legit cabaret voice in an incredible way- watch her crowd-surf, strip her band to its collective underpants and force male audience members to join her in Fosse-esque choreography. She is a tour de force!

Wow!
She sounds perfect for Kneehighs slightly absurd take on shows!

Maureen Lipman and Amy Winehouse's lesbian progeny...

(and I mean that as a compliment)

I saw this yesterday evening, my expectations for this were quite low, however I had a bit of a surprise as I found this show to be very enjoyable and Devonian, this bilingual 'Meow Meow' character was certainly very inspired, the role helped really to break the show up and added a bit of French influenced fun to the show, I do not know if you had a cabaret personality in the show before? This addition really helped to define parts of the show, it is plausible to cut the whole 'Meow Meow' role out, but why would you want to do something that would be detrimental to the show.

Very strong appearances all round, I think Joanne Riding's reputation speaks for itself, so doesn't need my plaudits the role of Madeline played by Cynthia Erivo was superbly played and stood out for me, the two leads were also good. The one let down of the evening was the music, which became monotonous, at times it sounded like someone strumming on a piano for two hours, but this is a bit of a weak complained for a show that exceeded itself.
ThankstoPhantom

I agree, Mama! I saw BRIEF ENCOUNTER during its US Tour a little over a year ago... My friend and I are probably going to book in a week or so.

Going to see this a week come Saturday. I am glad to see risks being taken, this is not the typical sort of musical to be opening up in the West End.

I really enjoyed it. The score is by far the weakest element, but the design and production is pretty much faultless in the way the story is executed. Meow Meow is excellent!! Definitely a one to see.

LeGrand's classic score is the weakest element? Oh Mark!

Still if that's the weakest thing, it bodes well for everything else!

Apart from "I Will Wait For You" there is really no good melodies, more sung dialogue/recit than anything else. The saving grace is really the design and the additional character created for Meow Meow. She just has something about her and so much stage presence!

Mark 101% agree with Meow Meow, the show would be very flat without her, she breaks up all 3 acts perfectly.
