After a major donation the National Theatres smallest, studio, auditorium is to renamed The Dorfman.

The £10 million personal gift from Dorfman, who is the chairman of Travelex and sits on the National’s board, will form the cornerstone of the theatre’s £70 million fundraising campaign for the NT Future project.

Dorfman commented: 'I am a huge fan of the energy and innovation the National has achieved in recent years and am delighted to lead from the front in supporting its NT Future redevelopment.
I have been privileged to play a leading role at the National Theatre over the past eight years, in particular with the pioneering Travelex £10 Tickets season'.

The Dorfman? Is this serious?

Shades of Broadway.
Faced with these Loreleis, what man can moralize!

Lord Cottesloe was chairman of the South Bank Board which was in charge of the building of the National. He was also in charge of the Arts Council in the '60s when the NT was first started.

I wouldn't worry about the name being changed, theatregoers will still be referring to it as the Cottesloe for decades to come. NT Renames Cottesloe Theatre

Not keen on the renaming but it could have been worse as it could have been renamed The Travelex Theatre.

Not sure about this; it will always be the Cottesloe to me though you can't deny Dorfman and Travelex's contribution to the NT over recent years

To me, its the 'Julia Mckenzie Sondheim Studio', after seeing her Mrs Lovett there 8 or 9 times, every other show there just pales!

Because do remember, when you go to see a play, the name of the theatre is the linchpin upon which your enjoyment of the ENTIRE EVENING depends.

Good on Mr Dorfman. I feel bad for Lord Cottesloe, but what with Travelex and the £10 million gift, you can hardly say Mr Dorfman isn't dedicated to the place. :P

^ If stroking philanthropists' egos in this way means they give LOTS MORE £££££!!!, then I'd say that easily makes up for sitting in a theatre with a slightly peculiar name.

Yes, we need some billionaire to quadruple Mr. Dorfman's gift and take that Olivier fellow's place.

Absolutely outrageous and crass!

Perhaps if they stump up the cash, the Olivier could become the Tesco Theatre!

If I were Mr Dorfman, I would be saying "thank you for the offer, but let's just respect the theatre's origins and heritage".

I am disgusted.

Oh yes, and are we suggesting that Mr Dorman's contribution is greater than, say Sir Peter Hall's, or even Trevor Nunn's?

Unbelievable!

It is high time Sir Peter had a theatre named after him - though they could kill two birds with one stone and call it Dorfman Hall. Or Nunn Hall for that matter, though that sounds like a school.

Mama, Ah yes, I remember seeing Julia McKenzie deliver us her Mrs Lovett there. A performance that will linger long in my memory. Has there ever been a better Mrs Lovett before or since? Not from what I've seen
