I have just been looking at The Society of London Theatres website. at past Olivier winners.

I noticed in 1989 the awards seemed to be cancelled? can anyone shed any light on this, if in deed it did happen?

Were they cancelled or was it just a re-organisation of "proceedings" ? I can't remember. These awards have undergone many changes over the years.
Incredible that Return to the Forbidden Planet beat Miss Saigon for Best Musical that year.

Exactly I take your last point, RTTFP was pretty much horrible.

Likewise The Will Roger Follies beating Miss Saigon to the Tony.

It appears the 1989 and 1990 Oliviers were combined. Here's a link to the winners:

Hope it helps.

How can I put it? To me, Miss Saigon is a misconcieved mess, a soggy travesty of its brilliant source material, Madama Butterfly.

Will Rogers Follies is a wonderfully smart and original theatrical biography told in the form of a Ziegfield Follies show - much as The Scottsboro Boys is told in the form of a minstrel show, I'm surprised comparisons have not been noted -with an exceptionally strong book and a GREAT Cy Coleman score.

IMO, of course.
