Norman Wisdon, Brilliant Comic, Has Died
Sir Norman Joseph Wisdom, OBE.
4 February 1915 4 October 2010
He was a brilliant comedian, singer/songwriter and actor best known for a series of comedy films produced between 1953 and 1966 featuring his hapless onscreen character Norman Pitkin.
Charlie Chaplin famously referred to Wisdom as his "favourite clown".
He later forged a career on Broadway and as a television actor, winning critical acclaim for his dramatic role of a dying cancer patient in the television play 'Going Gently' in 1981.
He was knighted in 2000 and spent much of his later life on the Isle of Man. Wisdom retired from acting at the age of 90 after his health declined.
He appeared at the London Palladium almost every year though its hey days as a variety theatre in the 50s and 60s. He had a 2 weeks season at the Theatee Royal Drury Lane in 1979 that was extended and extended until it closed 9 months later.
He appeared in the musical version of 'Charlies Aunt' called 'Wheres Charley?' at the Palace Theatre and then later on Broadway. He appeared in the film version too.
His movies are all on DVD today and constantly still hit the charts.

Thankyou so much for honouring this great actor Mama, one of my all-time favourite British comedians. He was in a film shown on telly here last week, Five Children and It i think it was called..poor love stood in his Antique shop window, and that was about all he did. Then i worked out today upon hearing the sad news, he must have been 90 when he made the film...astounding. Vale Norman Wisdom.

A definite childhood hero of mine. I would regularly go to my local fleapit cinema in the school holidays to see Norman's films (and sometimes stay all day and see them over and over!). I often made my school chums laugh with my impression of Wisdom with the too tight jacket and flat cap turned sideways - by tripping head first into the locker door - it sounded painful but really wasn't (or maybe that's why I turned out the way I did).

If you ever get the chance to see the movie 'What's Good For The Goose', sometimes playing on TV in the middle of the night, don't miss it. Norman Wisdom in a so-called sex comedy, totally embarrassing and quite probably the worst film ever made!
