One of London's most unique theatres is to be demolished to make way for a new hotel.

Puddle Duck City Hotel will now replace the 1959 Mermaid Theatre in the City's Puddle Dock. Demolition starts in 2011 with the new development opening in 2012.
Alsop Sparch has won planning permission for a 250 million, seven storey hotel at Puddle Dock in the City of London.
The 30,000sq m scheme involves demolishing the existing 1970s Mermaid House and Mermaid Theatre.
The Environment Agency and the Theatres Trust have both objected to the scheme.
