Is Sharon Clarke too old for Sofia? I think Steph from OTR could be a good Celie

If that is true, that is good news, even though I was not keen on the show on Broadway when I saw it, much prefer Next to Normal or In the heights to come over.

Just out of interest where did you hear about this.

Personally I quite liked the show but I have to wonder about its viability for the West End. How did the movie do in the UK? Or was it too long ago to matter?

This is a huge gamble. However, the all black 'Cat On A Hot Tin Roof', which played to audiences beyond the black theatre-goer, may have signalled that London is ready for this.

I have listened to the cast album once, when I first got it, some years ago and have never revisted it since.

West-End theatre publisher on Facebook. I don't know their source. Anyone else found anything else?

I hope not.

Saw this in NYC and it was enjoyable, but not particularly great, and there are far better shows that could come over instead.

"sources asked not to be named yet but let's say it was from a reliable source (casting director)"

Would be great if it did indeed happen. That would be 2 Whoopi film adaptations opening in the space of afew month (Ghost is on for November 2011)

I hope London enjoys I more than I did. A couple of good songs in a very uninspired show. It's basically the movie on stage with some of the classic scenes directly recreated. I found the majority of the score to be bland and forgettable (the orchestrations of the overture sound like any number of late-70s forgotten flops) with a ridiculously staged finale. And the "African" number at the top of Act II was just embarrassing. With the exception of the hard-working actors, the whole thing came off as incredibly pedestrian and lazy.

I thought of going to see this in New York a few years ago but after listening to some of the songs (which I thought were pretty horrible LOL) I decided to avoid it, especially as the original movie bored me to tears. So I'm not exactly jumping up and down with exitement over the prospect of this coming over to London.

I have never been able to listen to the show in full. It's really not what I expected the musical to be and kinda put me off a teeny bit because I have always loved the book. But I'd still love to see it, there's a few songs which really suit the show, but the whole Gospel thing...it kinda makes sense I guess but is a very odd approach.

I would say it's a show better seen and experienced than listened to. Rather like Memphis.

Mister Matt I saw this twice, and it is nothing like the movie. The movie is so close-minded and 70's. This, I found, to be an amazing adaptation of the book- dealing with the issues such as Celie and Shug falling in love (which isn't even mentioned in the film!).

It really IS an experience, and a joyus one at that! I loved loved loved it!

Hell, if I heard those songs playing in an elevator, I'd get out on the first floor and walk up the stairs. lol

Apparently a West-End production has definitely been confirmed by the casting director.

I would of thought The Piccadilly or Shaftsbury would be a great fit.
