The Musical- NOT the theatre!

Once Upon A Time At The Adelphi

The multi award winning new musical, 'Once Upon A Time At The Adelphi', which was premiered as part of Liverpools European City of Culture Year in 2008 gets a London run at The Union Theatre in Southwark for a strictly limited season opening on March 5th and running for just 4 weeks.

'Taking an irreverent look at the iconic Liverpool hotel during its 1930s heyday, 'Once Upon A Time At The Adelphi' captures the glitz and glamour of Hollywood as bigwigs pour off the luxury liners for their first taste of England. Amidst all the decadence, no-nonsense Alice from reception has fallen for the charming Thompson from accounts - but fate, Hollywood, two wars and a dizzying array of staff and guests intervene in a love story spanning 60 years'.

The London run is being presented in association with the theatres that staged it originally 2 years ago, the Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse and is ahead of a major West End presentation in 2011.
Directed and written by Phil Willmott.
Willmott's previous musicals are 'Dick Barton: Special Agent', 'A Christmas Carol', 'Around The World In 80 Days-The Musical'
London casting includes: Marc Antolin, Emily Barlow, Emma Barr, Jamie Birkett, Benjamin Bond, Lucyelle Cliffe, Nicholas Collier, Paddy Crawley.

The production is designed by Charlie Cridlan, with musical supervision by Elliot Davis, choreography by Andrew Wright, musical direction by Michael Bradley and costumes by Geraldine Spencer.

I saw this in Liverpool. Thought it was pretty good, but nothing particularly original. Would be interested to see what, if any changes they make for London. Some of the references were very liverpool centric and may not travel well. One song in particular was pretty much just a list of places in Liverpool, which felt very much designed as a crowd pleasing 'name check' for the scouse audiences.

Just booked to see this on Saturday next week. Would be interested in opinions of anyone who has seen it. Have yet to see a bad show at the Union though so really looking forward to this!

It's OK. The production is great, but the show itself is saachrine sweet and tries to manufacture charm rather than falling into it. Can't remember any of the songs despite only seeing it a week ago either.
