Chitty Favorite, Lionel Jeffries Dies Aged 83

The well-known actor and film director Lionel Jeffries has died at the age of 83.

Best known for directing 'The Railway Children' and appearing in 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang', his long career spanned theatre, film and television.
Known for his bald head, baritone voice and bristling moustache, the London-born actor trained at RADA before making his screen debut in 1950.
In later years he played the loveable Grandad in children's TV show Woof!

He was last seen in a major role on the West End stage in 1984 playing Horrace Vandergelder in 'Hello Dolly' opposite Danny La Rue. He appeared in brief parts for the Theatre Of Comedy in the mid 80s, based at the Shaftesbury Theatre.

Actress Jenny Agutter, star of The Railway Children, remembered him as being 'an extraordinary character' and 'wonderfully funny'.

My mum was in Mr Blunden with him. (NO, my mother wasn't Diana Dors!!!)

She just told me how, when I was a kid that i used to go to the Odeon to see the movie every 3 or weeks as it was shown on Saturday mornings at 10.30am and I would tell anyone that would listen that my mum was in the movie! They didn't believe me of course and then she met me outside and I gave as good as a 2 finger gesture as I could as we walked away!

I didn't realize he directed The Amazing Mr. Blunden. I had read the original book (The Ghosts by Antonia Barber), and while I was disappointed at the way some things were changed, overall it was one of my favorite films.
