Hello Campers! EDIT:-Goodbye Campers!
Bernie Nolan has just joined the cast as Gladys Pugh, originally played by Ruth Madoc.

The BBC hit comedy is to take to the stage this summer touring the U.K.
This is a revised version of the show that played a sell out season in Bournemouth in 1983 and then a Christmas season at the Victoria Palace Theatre followed later that year by a record breaking summer season in Blackpool.
That show had almost the complete TV cast and was basically an excuse for a variety show to show of the various talents of the TV cast.
It was billed as 'A Summer Pantomime'.
This new tour has just two of the originals!
Tour dates:
Stevenage
Darlington
Coventry
Basingstoke
Hayes
Lowestoft
Worthing
Blackpool
Buxton
Dunstable
Swansea
Stockport
Peterbourgh
Hastings
Sheffield
Southend
Southsea

I was taken to see this for my birthday back in the day. I'd requested to see Bugsy Malone at Her Majesty's, so i wasn't very happy. I wasn't even that big a fan of the TV show. What were my parents thinking?

I did get to see Bugsy Malone btw, and that wasn't that great either.

From Pop Star To Opera Star To Touring In Rehashed TV Show On Stage!

Hello Campers!

Bernie Nolan is to play Gladys Pugh.

Maybe she thought she would be in Covent Garden performing Madam Butterfly not singing music hall songs in Western Super Mare after the last few weeks on TV!

Does this mean Bernie won't be in Flashdance when it hits the West End? She was great in the tour would be a shame for her not to reprise her role.

I saw the original show at the Victoria Palace theatre in 1983 - quite wonderful. The highlight had to be"The Ugly Bug Ball" when everyone dressed as insects! Also of note was the section when the characters performed their party pieces - Jeffrey: Noel Coward, Peggy: Gracie Fields, Fred: Frankie Vaughan, etc. I remember that Leslie Dwyer, who played Punch and Judy man Mr Partridge, wouldn't do the live show, claiming that he was too old. He was replaced by Ben Warriss (of Jewell and Warriss fame - Google them) who was actually older!

I loved it too John. Very of its day- the tail end of British variety really.

I would have though Duncan James missed a trick in not tempting Ruth Madoc and Sue Pollard back. They were icons of the series and more importantly, still alive!

After just 5 weeks of 21 week UK tour this production has closed. The producers decided that it was 'better to close now before major losses were made'.

I think that may already have happened- the show was booked for Swansea next week and a Grand total of 83 seats had been sold for the entire week- 7 shows in a 1000 seater!

Some TV shows like this and their transfer to the stage stand the test of time.
'Dads Army' now on its 3rd UK tour and the current production of 'Porridge' have found an audience but as big a show as 'Hi De Hi was in the 80s its audience have decided to remember it on TV.

I heard it was doing terrible business. The producers have another show out at the moment- what is it? Apparently that is also doing badly and this jeopardizes plans for the Autumn, which I think involve Vicki Michele.

Well exactly!
It becomes nothing more than a cheap impersonation show.

In the 80s when these shows started to transfer to the stage at least they had 90% of the TV cast and they played the London Palladium etc.
