Why is Evita so hard to record?!#1

Ok, I really like Evita, love the movie and really liked the recent UK tour (didnt care much for the West End revival though).

But it seems so hard to find a brilliant recording!

So far ive listened to/own

Elaine Paige OLC - Good, the best ive heard so far.

Patti Lupone OBC - Really like the hardness that she brings to ti, the role needs that. But otherwise I cant stand her voice and question if she can sing and the Che is shocking.

2006 revival - Unlistenable

Movie Soundtrack - I love all performances in the movie but on CD the lack of vocal power is more noticable.

Havent listeded to the concept recording though

Personaly, I find the concept the most listenable. I think Julie Covington is by far the best sung Eva. Though it does sound a little dated and there is that stupid insecticide motif (which I am so glad they cut) but if you ignore those I think it is the best recording out there.

The concept is the only one I've ever listened too. I've still got it on double gatefold LP:

Mandy Patinkin is my favourite male singer - ever! And his Che is by far the best I've heard. (And he won the Tony for it!)
I hate the original West End recording - Paige is okay but David Essex is dreadful. The original concept album (which I have on vynil) is pretty good.

Essex was bland to say the least.

The concept album is still my favourite too. Julie Covington was amazing and she made it enthralling. "Rainbow High", as she sings it, is a particular perennial favourite. And listening to that really emphasises how appallingly inadequate Madonna was in comparison.
