Flop shows you secretly loved...#1
Posted: 7/17/09 at 1:00pm
Ok, so I've just finshed reading "Not Since Carrie" by Ken Mandelbaum (AMAZING Book!), and was reading comments on "Too Close to the Sun" and wondered what flops or not so loved shows you secretly enjoyed...

Mine has to be "Desperatley Seeking Susan" which for me was so bad, it made me smile and laugh so much it was great.... and the music was so good and so ill fitting with the story it was just awfully good fun. haha.

Ok.... your turn....

If we're talking British musicals only, it has to be Moby Dick.

I must admit I have a soft spot for imagine this.

As for broadway successes that bombed in London then spring awakening and the drowsy chaperone are two of my favourite ever shows

Love maybe too strong a word but i quite liked Desperately Seeking Susan, Spring Awakening and even though i know it's going to make me persona non grata on here i thought Rent remixed didn't quite deserve the drubbing that it got. I think most of its problems were inherent in the show already.

p.s. if i love a show i love a show, no secret.

I too loved The Drowsy Chaperone and Spring Awakening and it is a tragedy they had such short runs. Rent Remixed wasn't as bad as some people make out but I wish they had just put Rent on (Rent on the same set as Remixed would have worked I think but I have never seen Rent on stage).
I guess The Woman in White and Lord of the Rings were both flops too and I loved both of those.

I wouldn't call it a secret love though. I proudly tell anyone who'll listen about Drowsy and Spring Awakening and I went to the last nights of The Woman in White, Lord of the Rings and Spring Awakening which was the most amazing night ever.

I am forced to jump onto the bandwagon and say Spring Awakening.

London, I thought Marguerite was excellent, great story that was perfectly acted out on stage.

I also thought Young Frankenstein got a battering, always wondered what the reviews would of been like if it came out before The Producers?

Well LOTR didnt make back it's initial investments, so thus makes it a flop! (right?)

I LOVED Spring Awakening and Drowsy Chaperone!
And you know, I suppose Rent Remixed wasn't THAT bad! *Eyes dart round, then quickly opens up iTunes to listen to the performance of Rent Remixed I recorded to re-live one of the happiest moments of my life! XD*

I think LOTR was one of the biggest flops of all time! shame though as it wasn't all bad, just did not catch on.

'Carrie' in Stratford had a certain sense of occasion about it!
She lived up to it, and more, as history now tells.
Rarely have I experienced such electricity in a theatre before curtain up.
By intermission the wires were more than a bit tangled.

Our journey back to London had very little conversation about what we had just witnessed, it took 24hrs for me to untangle the night before.
Unforgettable theatre.

"Flops" on Broadway that I loved include:
13
A Catered Affair
The Civil War
Big
A Tale Of Two Cities

As for London - I loved Windy City many years back and also Matador. More recently, Spring Awakening - which was commercially a flop in the West End - I regard as true work of genius.

Depends what we're considering a flop, but favourites of mine include (and most certainly not secretly), Chess, Lord of the Rings, Drowsy Chaperone, Time and Lestat, the first few of which I think were underappreciated genius, the latter two of which are so bad I can't help enjoying them.
