Cyrano de Bergerac, a play written in verse by Edmond Rostand in 1897, is a timeless story of love, insecurity, and the power of words. The play centers around Cyrano, a brilliant swordsman and poet who is deeply in love with the beautiful Roxane. However, Cyrano's insecurity about his large nose prevents him from confessing his feelings. Instead, he throws himself into helping Christian, a handsome but tongue-tied soldier, woo Roxane. Cyrano secretly pens love letters and poems for Christian, unknowingly creating a complex love triangle. As Roxane falls for Christian's perceived eloquence, Christian himself comes to understand the depth of her love, fueled by Cyrano's unmatched words. Cyrano de Bergerac explores the depths of unrequited love and the sacrifices we make for those we love, all while celebrating the beauty and power of language.

The Royal Alexandra Theatre Marquee Lights Will Be Dimmed for Canadian Theatre Icon Marti Maraden in September
September 02, 2023To honour Marti's tremendous contributions to the theatre, the company will dim the lights of the Royal Alexandra upon the first performance of the start of the new season — Saturday, September 23 at 8 pm, for the Toronto premiere of the musical SIX.

July 14, 2022Bernard Shaw's brilliant dark comedy The Doctor's Dilemma, the first of the final trio of main season shows, begins previews July 16 at the Festival Theatre. On July 27, Cicely Hamilton's funny and prophetic Just to Get Married begins previews at the Royal George Theatre, while August Wilson's haunting Gem of the Ocean begins previews on August 5 at the Jackie Maxwell Studio Theatre.

The Shaw Receives Support From The Province's Community Building Fund
February 02, 2022The Shaw Festival welcomed the grant it received from the Government of Ontario's Community Building Fund - Operating stream in 2021. The relief funding of $250,000, delivered by the Ontario Trillium Foundation, helped sustain the Festival's operations and allowed for the creation of new experiences and programs.
