Xerxes is in love with Romilda. She loves not him but his brother, Arsamenes. Xerxes has additionally already a betrothed, Amastris, who dresses as a man to spy on Xerxes. Romildas sister is also trying to get it together with Arsamenes ... A letter turns up and down on all relationships. Who is taking who? A comic love carousel where everyone is in love and nothing is as it appears to be. The real Xerxes was one of history lynnigaste psychopaths but in Handel's elegant baroque comedy, it's all about the amorous escapades and breathtaking beautiful music. It is a perfect firework of brilliant vocal art, and as they royal love intrigues picks delivered one more brilliant aria after another. Opera contains two byxroller, namely roles played by men but women.
