The music was then given the epithet "degenerate" or "decadent" and several of these composers died in concentration camps.

This concert puts all of this into perspective by playing music from around this time by Jewish and non-Jewish composers: by those who lived, those who were executed and those who survived.

The concert is in three parts, with intermissions between them. The program includes a performance of Hans Krása's children's opera Brundibar – it was first performed in the concentration camp in Terezín ("Theresienstadt" in German). Shortly after that performance, the composer and the whole cast were murdered.

You can also experience Arnold Schönberg's A Survivor from Warsaw, Richard Strauss' Vier letzte Lieder, Gustav Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde and Korngold's cello concert. Living, dying and surviving is a powerful and poignant concert that makes us reflect on the cruel circumstances of life through art.
