The opera is based on true events during the French Revolution when the sixteen nuns in a convent was sentenced to death because they continued to practice their religion despite the current ban. The opera is spirituality against materialism - and suddenly you have to choose sides. director Johanna Garpes acclaimed set of Francis Poulenc's opera of 1951 is back at the Royal Opera. The set was released in 2011 and set the French revolution slogans of liberty, equality and fraternity to a head. Where do we stand in relation to the words in Europe today? Am I prepared to defend everyone's right to freedom even if I do not stand behind them, it is all about? Or even think about them?
