Carmen personifies independence and passion: she is wild, fearless, voracious. When she throws her rose to Don José, thus commences a relationship that will end in tragedy. The otherwise conscientious José becomes a man possessed, abandoning everything to follow her. But as Carmen’s passion wanes, she swiftly moves on to the next target, the next man. She is a woman who will never compromise her independence.
Bizet’s seductive factory girls have been capturing hearts for almost 150 years. Sir David McVicar’s gory and visually spectacular interpretation was created for Glyndebourne 2002.
In our revival, Katarina Giotas returns as Carmen, with Joachim Bäckström as her bewitched lover, Don José. The self-assured bullfighter Escamillo, played by Mats Persson, sweeps us away with the Toreador Song in act one, while Frida Engström delights us in the role of José’s childhood love, sweet Micaëla. Conductor Patrik Ringborg infuses the melodious and dramatic music with glory.
