Mimì and Rodolfo fall in love at first sight in an attic studio. They live happily together until Rodolfo breaks off their relationship on the grounds that Mimì is too flirtatious. In fact she is seriously ill and their poverty-stricken existence has made her worse. At the end the two lovers are briefly reunited before Mimì dies.
