Lyric Theatre (Broadway) History
Built over the foundations of the original Lyric (1903; 1,261 seats) and Apollo (1920; 1,194 seats) Theatres, today's Lyric Theatre combines architectural preservation with state-of-the-art construction and technology. The spirit and character of New York's grandest historic theatres have been maintained and united with the technical amenities of a modern facility. The blending of old and new traditions extends from the theatre itself to its inaugural production. Ragtime, a new musical set in the same New York Gilded Age. Since then productions at the Theatre have included the second revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's Jesus Christ Superstar, a revival of the Broadway classic 42nd Street, Mel Brooks' musical Young Frankenstein, Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark which featured direction by Tony Award-winner Julie Taymor, music and lyrics by 22-time Grammy Award-winners Bono and The Edge, a jubilant revival of On the Town, and Cirque du Soleil's first Broadway endeavor Paramour.
The first box office record to be set at the Lyric Theatre (then the Foxwoods Theatre) was Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark. At the time, the show broke the record for the highest single-week gross of any show in Broadway history. The production grossed $2,941,794 over nine performances at 100.03% capacity for the week ending January 1, 2012. However, in just its third week of previews Harry Potter and the Cursed Child set a new record at the Broadway box office for the highest single-week gross of a straight play in Broadway history. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child grossed $2,138,859 over eight performances for the week ending April 8, 2018. The production went on to break its own record again, earning $2,525,850 over eight performances for the week ending December 30, 2018.
