Photos: First look at MTVarts' WELCOME HOME
by Jerri Shafer - Nov 9, 2021

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio – MTVarts, a nonprofit, all-volunteer theater company in Mount Vernon, Ohio, is honoring Vietnam veterans this Veterans Day with a special production of “Welcome Home: A Tribute to Vietnam Veterans,” on Nov. 11-12 at Knox Memorial Theater in Mount Vernon. “My main exposure to the Vietnam experience was through the eyes of a 13-year-old boy watching his older brother putting away his high school football and seeing him board a plane in route to Vietnam,” said show director Bruce Jacklin. “There were no emails, texts, or Facetime to keep in touch. Only the evening news offering any peace of mind that your son was not a part of a deadly conflict.”

Review: The Dance Theatre of Harlem Blissfully Entertains Audiences at The Broad Stage
by Shari Barrett - Apr 21, 2018

I was lucky enough to be one of the lucky ones to be in the Broad Stage audience recently when the extraordinary Dance Theatre of Harlem invited Los Angeles audiences, for the first time in way too many years, to join in with them in experiencing the wonders of neo-classical and contemporary ballet that is both of the moment and timeless. The evening's 105-minute program consisted of Brahms Variations, choreographed by Robert Garland (2016), Dancing on the Front Porch of Heaven, choreographed by Ulysses Dove (1993) and Vessels, choreographed by Darrell Grand Moultrie (2014), each more enchanting than the last!

BWW Review: LONE RIDERS Explores the Wild West in Austin, TX
by Amy Bradley - May 18, 2016

Trinity Street Players invites audiences to slow down and admire the old west in their latest production, LONE RIDERS, within the quaint blackbox at the First Austin Baptist Church. This original work, written by Carol Wright Krause and directed by Manuel Zarate, hopefully will survive its first workshop unscathed. Traditionally, during workshop productions, the writing and direction are experimental  - meaning quite possibly audiences can only see this original work in its current form once. During this preliminary malleable phase of any show, daring production companies like Trinity Street Players introduce something that literally has never been seen before. This sense of adventure is linked to the spirit and theme of LONE RIDERS. The intimate cast of players and the wonderful guitar stylings of Walker Lyle, take you on their adventure forcing self-reflection of individuals' motives and point of view.

BWW Reviews: COUNTRY ROADS: A JOHN DENVER CELEBRATION Fills the El Portal with Love
by Shari Barrett - Apr 4, 2014

John Denver was an environmentalist before it was fashionable and a man not afraid to sing about his deep love for the Earth and his wife. While few radio stations still play his music, his many albums sold millions of copies during his singing career from 1969-1997. Those of us in the audience on opening night were quick to join in singing, spreading Denver's joy and love throughout the theater.
