TheatreWorks Silicon Valley continues its 51st season with the hit musical Ragtime. This sweeping and stirring musical masterpiece paints a portrait of America at the dawn of the twentieth century, interweaving the lives of three families—an African American family, a Jewish Immigrant family, and a wealthy white family—finding their places and pursuing the American Dream in a rapidly changing world. Featuring a Tony Award-winning book by Pulitzer Prize finalist Terrence McNally (Master Class, Kiss of the Spider Woman, The Rink) and a Tony Award-winning score by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens (Once on This Island, Anastasia, Seussical The Musical), this musical is based on E. L. Doctorow’s best-selling novel of the same name. Ragtime will be presented June 1-26, 2022 (press opening: June 4) at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts. Sounds too incredible, right? That's what I thought until I attended their latest creation, Billie Holiday Alive! at the new Hologram USA Theater in Hollywood

Rubicon Theatre Company celebrates Black History Month with THE DEVIL'S MUSIC: THE LIFE AND BLUES OF BESSIE SMITH, starring singer and actress Miche Braden of the original Off-Broadway production (named one of the 10 Best Off-Broadway productions of the year by the N.Y. Daily Times). Described by CBC as a, "bawdy, bluesy, boozy rollicking night out at the theatre," the show follows the life, loves and career of blues and jazz singer Bessie Smith, called the "Empress of the Blues." 

Deaf West's acclaimed production of Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik's Spring Awakening, directed byMichael Arden and choreographed by Spencer Liff, began rehearsals earlier this month for its big Broadway transfer. The company invited BroadwayWorld inside the rehearsal room today for a sepcial sneak peek of 'Mama Who Bore Me,' 'The Bitch of Living,' and 'The Song of Purple Summer'. So when David decides to write a blog for Broadwayworld while living in Vienna for a month, he doesn't anticipate that finding a library will be difficult, because it is, or finding wifi that matter. Thus here he sits in Westbahnof, pretending to wait for a connection, eating a croissant, and typing his blog post on his airplane mode iPhone (to avoid roaming). That's right, there is no laptop when RyanAir (a cheap European airline) had the strictest weight restrictions imaginable.

This year my daughter saw her first two Broadway shows: 'Sister Act' and 'Mary Poppins'. (We're not counting that unfortunate Lion King incident at age five when she was scared out of the theatre ten minutes into the first act). This past week, just when the drudgery of school vacation was about to drive Mom batty, we took in Broadway Experience Number Three: 'How to Succeed In Business Without Really Trying' staring the adorable Nick Jonas.

Yale Repertory Theatre (James Bundy, Artistic Director; Victoria Nolan, Managing Director) presents the east coast premiere of Lydia by Octavio Solis, directed by Juliette Carrillo at Yale Repertory Theatre (1120 Chapel Street, at York Street) beginning February 6 through February 28. Opening Night is Thursday, February 12. Lydia features music composed by Chris Webb; sets by Andrew Boyce; costumes by Amanda Seymour; lighting by Jesse Belsky; sound design, additional music, and arrangements by David Molina; voice and dialect by Beth McGuire; fight direction by Rick Sordelet; dramaturgy by Matt Cornish; and stage management by Donald E. Claxon.

Author of the Alley's outstanding success The Clean House, Sarah Ruhl creates a tale based on the Greek myth of Orpheus that is 'exhilarating' as 'we enter a surreal world, as lush and limpid as a dream' (The New Yorker). On the day Eurydice is to marry her true love Orpheus, a misstep sends her to the surreal depths of the Underworld, where she has a surprising reunion and ultimately must decide whether to follow Orpheus back to the land of the living. The New York Times described Eurydice as 'a magical play with gripping emotional potency...a love letter to the world...'

The opening reception of the 'Rights of Passage' exhibition at the National Arts Club took place on Friday, September 26th. Lynn Redgrave came out to celebrate in support of her daughter, Annabel Clark, and her work with fellow NY photographer Bruce Byers on the photography exhibition that benefits non-profit organizations providing children with a proper education and medical care.
