“Don Quixote”, Miguel de Cervantes’ epic Spanish masterpiece and arguably the world’s first modern novel, has survived the ravages of time since its initial publishing in 1605 as well as the pernicious predations of countless other “authors” who stole Cervantes’ story and published unofficial sequels to the tale over following years, particularly in the new world.

Man of La Mancha, one of the world’s most popular musicals, is now playing at Theatre 29 weekends through March 17. Set in Spain in 1597, “Man of La Mancha” follows the story of Manuel de Cervantes, the author of Don Quixote, a prisoner awaiting trial by the infamous Spanish Inquisition.

Rehearsals are now underway for A Sign of the Times, a new musical featuring the songs of Petula Clark, Lesley Gore, Dusty Springfield, and other classic pop hits of the 1960s. BroadwayWorld is taking you behind the scenes with the cast below!

Los Altos Hills will be alive with The Sound of Music this summer, when multi-award winning Foothill Music Theatre presents the Tony, Grammy, and Academy Award-winning musical. This beloved musical, set in Austria in 1938, follows novice Maria Rainer who becomes the governess for the von Trapp family, capturing the hearts of the seven children and their father, a widowed naval captain. As the Nazis occupy Austria, the family is forced make decisions which forever change their lives, fleeing their home in pursuit of freedom. Director Milissa Carey, music director William Liberatore, and choreographers Brett and C.J. Blankenship breathe new life into this classic tale of hope, love, and family. The Sound of Music will play July 19- August 5, 2018(press opening: July 20) at the Smithwick Theatre, I-280 & El Monte Road, Los Altos Hills. NOTHING - THE MOD MUSICAL stars Carol Harrison as Kay Marriott and Chris Simmons as Steve Marriott, as well as Samuel Pope as Young Steve Marriott, Stefan Edwards as Kenney Jones, Stanton Wright as Ronnie Lane, Alexander Gold as Ian McLagan, Edward Elgood as Jimmy Winston, Karis Anderson as P.P. Arnold and Russell Floyd as Don Arden. Also in the cast are Daniel Beales, Alfie Harrison-Foreman, Dani Acors and Emily Daniels. The Broadway community mourns the loss of legendary actress and recording artist Barbara Cook, who passed away on Tuesday, August 8th at age 89. The marquees of Broadway theatres in New York were dimmed in her memory on yesterday, August 9th at exactly 7:45pm for one minute.

Porchlight Music Theatre and Artistic Director Michael Weber are proud to announce the continuation of the fourth season of Chicago's hit "lost" musicals in staged concert series, Porchlight Revisits Little Me, music by Cy Coleman, lyrics by Carolyn Leigh and book by Neil Simon based on the novel by Patrick Dennis, with direction by Porchlight Artistic Director Michael Weber, musical direction by Linda Madonia, choreography by Craig Miller with special guest choreography by veteran Bob Fosse dancer Jane Lanier and starring Jeff Award-winner Matt Crowle. Porchlight Revisits Little Me is presented for three-nights-only Tuesday, Feb. 28 through Thursday, March 2 at 7:15 p.m. and is performed on the set of Porchlight's The Scottsboro Boys (previews begin Friday, Feb. 3) at Stage 773, 1225 W. One of the most eagerly awaited new shows of this year's New York Musical Festival (NYMF) is the special event 'Midnight at the Never Get' which will be presented at 42WEST (514 West 42nd Street) for three (3) performances: Thursday, July 28 @ 9pm; Sunday, July 31 @ 9pm; Monday, August 1 @ 8pm. Produced by Michael Chase Gosselin, the musical is conceived by and starring Sam Bolen and Mark Sonnenblick, with musical direction and arrangements by Adam Podd, choreography by Andrew Palermo and directed by Max Friedman. Audiences will be transformed back to 1965 when they enter the venue to the back room of The Never Get.  Featuring a sultry score fashioned after the American Songbook, 'Midnight at The Never Get' imagines two men who never existed at a time that very much did.

To life! The Broadway revival of FIDDLER ON THE ROOF is currently in previews, with an official opening slated for Sunday, December 20 at The Broadway Theatre (1681 Broadway). FIDDLER ON THE ROOF is directed by Tony Award winner Bartlett Sher, who most recently helmed the 2015 Tony Award-winning Broadway revival of The King and I. Sher has directed Burstein on Broadway in the revivals of Golden Boy and South Pacific, as well as in Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. It will be choreographed byHofesh Shechter, inspired by the original choreography of Jerome Robbins, and the music director will be Ted Sperling (The King and I, South Pacific). Broadway fans had plenty of reasons to celebrate this year, with dozens of shows having opened since January, hundreds of actors having made their debuts, and many more having returned to the stage for critically acclaimed performances. Not all news was good though, as we also suffered a loss of an incredible amount of talent. Below, BroadwayWorld sends a fond farewell to those who passed away in 2014.

For its fall offering, the New England Regional Theatre Company mounted an ambitious and stirring production of Man of La Mancha at the Orion Performing Arts Center in Topsham, Maine. The sixteen-person cast and twelve-musician ensemble invested this touching revival with passion and intelligence. Directed by John Willey, the 1965 Dale Wasserman-Mitch Leigh-Joe Darrion musical based on Miguel de Cervantes' epic novel, Don Quixote still burns with intensity, idealism, and a much-needed antidote in a chaotic modern world - the courage and hope to 'fight for the right' and follow the quest. Willey strikes the right balance between comedy and drama, and he handles the musical's framing device - that of Cervantes recounting his tale in a prison of the Inquisition - with visual and theatrical aplomb. He keeps the entire cast on stage for the duration and uses the exceptionally wide Orion space inventively, so that the action flows naturally and his musical staging is completely organic. Moreover, he elicits from his actors a fervent luminosity that proves inspiring.

Academy Award, Tony Award and Emmy Award winner Christopher Plummer takes the stage for 16 performances only in a Center Theatre Group special event, "A Word or Two," which opens at the CTG/Ahmanson Theatre tomorrow, January 22, 2014. Written and arranged by Plummer and directed by Tony Award winner Des McAnuff, "A Word or Two" is presented in association with the Stratford Festival of Canada and continues through February 9, 2014. Tradition is the theme as the 2012 Music Circus season continues with the all-time classic musical Fiddler on the Roof, at Wells Fargo Pavilion from August 14 - 19. Like the iconic rooftop musician, playful yet reverent Tevye teeters between his respect for tradition and his love for his daughters, each anxious to follow her heart after a suitor her father finds unsuitable. One of the most beloved musicals ever, Fiddler on the Roof is a heart-warming and at times humorous look at a family living though tumultuous times. Broadway composer/lyricist Stephen Schwartz went to see yesterday's matinee of Musical Theatre West's production MAN OF LA MANCHA. At the evening performance, Martha Wasserman (widow of Dale Wasserman) showed up with French actor David Serero, who is doing the role of Cervantes in the French production. See the photos below!

MAN OF LA MANCHA, opened on Broadway in 1965. This Tony Award Winner for Best Musical features one of Broadway's great standards, 'The Impossible Dream,' and takes place during the height of the Spanish Inquisition. While awaiting a hearing with the Inquisition, Miguel de Cervantes presents a play as his defense in a mock trial for the prisoners. In it, he plays Alonso Quijana, a man who has set his own reality aside and becomes Don Quixote De La Mancha. Assisted by Sancho Panza, Quixote attempts to avoid his mortal enemy, the Enchanter, and woo the serving wench and prostitute, Aldonza, who he takes to be the Lady Dulcinea.

MAN OF LA MANCHA opened February 10 at Musical Theatre West. It will run for fourteen performances through February 26, 2012. Check out the pictures of opening night below!
