Photo Flash: First Look at THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE OR, THE SLAVE OF DUTY At Wilbury Group
by BWW News Desk - May 18, 2018

This subversive, loopy, and fantastically eccentric take-think banjos, beach balls, and guitars-on Gilbert and Sullivan's preposterous musical took audiences in Chicago by storm when presented by rebel theatre-makers The Hipocrites. Frederic was mistakenly apprenticed as a young boy to a band of sentimental pirates. Now 21, he falls head-over-heels for the Major-General's daughter and forswears the buccaneer's life forever, or so he thinks. This buoyant, award-winning Pirates of Penzance by Sean Graney and Kevin O'Donnell and featuring just 12 actors (who also serve as the orchestra) is an irrevent and fresh homage to a world turned upside-down for Gilbert and Sullivan diehard fans and newcomers alike. Photo Coverage: Laura Osnes Returns to Cafe Carlyle with Ted Sperling and Special Guest Ryan Silverman
by Stephen Sorokoff - Sep 27, 2017

Even If you have premium seating at a Broadway musical or nightclub you still will not be able to feel that the beautiful girl with the spectacular voice performing on stage is singing just for you, and in your living room! Laura Osnes at Cafe Carlyle last night was acting and singing a few feet away from all of us in The Carlyle's legendary living room with her show called Cockeyed Optimists and as they say, you had to see it to believe it . Together with Ted Sperling and Laura's special guest Ryan Silverman they created The World of Rodgers and Hammerstein and it probably would be nominated for a Tony Award if it were in a theatre. The lucky audience that got to be up close and personal with Broadway royalty in Cafe Carlyle were at times overwhelmed with the beauty of the music being made by these three artists, who possess many theatre awards between them. So if you can join them, like all good hosts they are going to make sure there's plenty of good food, wine and conversation during your visit. You will even get to give them a hug and say goodnight to Laura, Ted, and Ryan after the show. (more...)

The Pirates of Penzance is Gilbert and Sullivan's fifth collaboration and follows young Frederic, an orphan who has mistakenly been apprenticed to an ineffectual but raucous band of pirates. He disavows the pirates' way of life and falls for the beautiful daughter of the Major-General Stanley, Mabel. But when the Pirate King discovers that General Stanley has lied about being an orphan to keep the pirates from stealing all of his belongings and carrying off his bevy of beautiful daughters, an 'ingenious paradox' may prevent the budding romance and lead to the death of 'The very model of a modern Major-General.' Pirates performs September 7th through September 23rd at MadLab Theatre and Gallery, 227 N. Thirt St. (Downtown) Columbus, Ohio. For more info visit http://www.srotheatre.org/ (more...)

BWW Review: THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE at Gilbert And Sullivan Austin
by Joni Lorraine - Jun 22, 2017

Since 1976 the Gilbert and Sullivan Austin has dedicated itself to providing the city with the works of Gilbert and Sullivan not so much by reinvention but by recreating how a production might have been staged originally. There is a respect due this sort of commitment, and the audience in attendance this last Saturday when I viewed the production, showed theirs in a true sense of a special occasion. I can recall the respect I was expected to display, and the authentic excitement I felt anytime I attended a play or musical back in the day. Back in the Ice Age, when I simultaneously became a teenager and discovered theatre, it was considered an event just shy of your cousin's wedding to attend the theatre. People got dressed up, showed up on time and applauded civilly after each musical number back then. Why, no one stood for an ovation even unless the production was spot on literally flawless.
