Just last night, Seth Meyers brought Jesus Christ Superstar to life in 'Popsicle Schticks'. The parody starts off with a quick nod to the iconic song 'Superstar,' then moves on to 'What's The Buzz?'. However, the lyrics sound a little more like this: 'What's the schtick? Tell me, what's a popsicle?' and 'Why should you want a schtick? Don't you mind about the popsicle.'

Alice Cooper, a seminal figure in rock 'n' roll whose compelling stage presence has made him a must see for five decades, has been cast as the flamboyant King Herod in NBC's staged rock concert of JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR LIVE! to be aired Easter Sunday, April 1. Today in 1977, the first revival of Jesus Christ Superstar opened at the Longacre Theatre, where it ran for 96 performances. Jesus Christ Superstar is a 1970 rock opera, whose music was composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber and whose book and lyrics were written by Tim Rice. The musical started as a rock opera concept recording before its first staging on Broadway in 1971. The musical is loosely based on the Gospels's accounts of the last week of Jesus's life, beginning with the preparation for the arrival of Jesus and his disciples in Jerusalem and ending with the crucifixion.

It's Good Friday, and what better way to reflect on Jesus' death than with musical theatre? In the vintage video below, Broadway favorite and Tony winner Lin-Manuel Miranda performs Jesus' Act II ballad, 'Gethsemane' in his college production of Jesus Christ Superstar. He writes: 'played Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar my freshman year at Wesleyan. I was not yet done with puberty. Screaming ensues.'

Andrew Lloyd Webber's rock musical JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR will kick off a 50-city, North American arena tour on June 9 in New Orleans.

The third Broadway revival is currently playing at the Neil Simon Theatre.

The musical started off as a rock opera concept recording before its first staging on Broadway in 1971. The musical is based very loosely on the Gospels' account of the last week of Jesus' life, beginning with the preparation for the arrival of Jesus and his disciples in Jerusalem, and ending with the crucifixion. It highlights political and interpersonal struggles between Judas Iscariot and Jesus, struggles that are not in the Bible. The resurrection is not included. It therefore largely follows the form of a traditional passion play.
