Description

L'Etoile - Nordic premiere on a comic opera

"Man cannot live by champagne alone - he also needs the music of Emmanuel Chabrier." - The Washington Post

La Belle Époque meets Broadway razzle-dazzle in Mark Lamos's production of this rare operatic gem. The stylish staging, inspired by Toulouse-Lautrec, brings his famous can-can girls to life with the effervescent choreography of Seán Curran.

L'Etoile (the Star) takes place in a fairytale world full of complexities and absurd comedy. Nonetheless, Emmanuel Chabriers opera was considered a musical masterpiece, admired by both Debussy, Ravel and Stravinsky. In recent decades, L'Etoile has enjoyed a growing popularity - among other things, it was staged at the Staatsoper in Berlin last year under the leadership of Simon Rattle.

In Bergen, the sought after French tenor Jean-Paul Fouchécourt performes the role of the crazy King Ouf, along with Blandine Staskiewics in the role of Lazuli. The opera is performed by a Norwegian-French team of soloists and Kor Vest, accompanied by the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra.
