Galileo hears of a new invention, a telescope, and builds one. With it, he confirms that the earth rotates around the sun. For this, he is summoned before a tribunal of the Inquisition where he is threatened with torture if he does not recant his findings. Bertolt Brecht puts the dilemma of one of history's greatest thinkers center stage; is it more important to cling to one's principles or save oneself to enable further contributions to knowledge?
Galileo examines the separation of science and the church by questioning the difference between empirical evidence and faith. Galileo's confirmation that the earth revolves around the sun is regarded as heresy, and a direct threat to church doctrine. Galileo pleads with church authorities to recognize that if something can be seen it must be true and to deny the truth is criminal. He is put on trial and recants, but serves house arrest, nonetheless. Galileo's capitulation, and his continued scientific investigation, even under the noses of his captors, provides a powerful exploration of issues of integrity, betrayal, courage, and devotion.
Beginning Saturday, October 2, 2010, L.A. Theatre Works Radio Theatre Series will air The Life of Galileo by Bertolt Brecht, starring Stacy Keach, Neil Dickson, Roy Dotrice, Jeannie Elias, Jill Gascoine, Peter Lavin, Robert Machray, Christopher Neame, Moira Quirk, Darren Richardson, Alan Shearman, Simon Templeman, Joanne Whalley, and Matthew Wolf. Notoriously scandalous British playwright Sarah Kane radically reworks Seneca's classical tragedy of incest and unrequited lust in the highly anticipated production of Red Letter Theater's Phaedra's Love, a brutal dark comedy exploring the themes of obsession, desire, and honesty. First debuted at the Gate, London in 1996, this regional premiere is directed and designed by Red Letter Theater Artistic Director David Hanzal, and features a host of some of the Twin Cities' favorite actors plus some wonderful new faces.

Anthony Mackie (The Hurt Locker) will play the lead role of Pentheus joining George Bartenieff as Cadmus; André De Shields as Teiresias; Jonathan Groff as Dionysus; Karen Kandel as Chorus Leader; Joan MacIntosh as Agave; Steven Rishard as Cowherd; and Rocco Sisto as Messenger.
