The Boy Friend - 1984 - West End History , Info & More

The Jazz Age lives on in this light, romantic spoof of 1920's musical comedy. brbrThe setting is-where else?-the French Riviera. Polly, an English heiress attending Mme. Dubonnet's Finishing School, falls in love with Tony, a delivery boy. Recalling her father's warning to beware fortune seekers, she posses as a working girl, unaware Tony is in fact the missing son of the wealthy Lord Brockhurst. Things get complicated with the unexpected arrival in Nice of Polly's parents and Lord and Lady Brockhurst-but not to worry, a happy ending is in store for all. brbrThe show's many memorable roles include the flirtatious Mme. Dubonnet, her boy-crazy students and Polly (the role which turned Julie Andrews into an overnight sensation), making it ideal for theatre groups with a strong female ensemble. With its catchy tunes, period dances (including the inevitable Charleston) and winning sense of humor, "The Boy Friend" is a sparkling, tongue-in-cheek 1920's romp in the spirit of "No, No, Nanette."

Tony Bennett Headlines 40th Ravinia Concert
by A.A. Cristi - Mar 29, 2019

In 1962, fifty-seven years ago, the magnificent TONY BENNETT recorded "I Left My Heart in San Francisco."  The song was honored with two Grammy Awards, including "Record of the Year" and gave Tony a signature tune that, as he delights in saying, has made him "A Citizen of the World."  Last March, the classic was entered into the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress as "an aural treasure worthy of preservation." Now in 2019, and about to turn an ageless 93, the legendary performer -  himself a world treasure - continues to leave his heart in each song that he sings and in every aspect of his life.

BWW Review: CHITA RIVERA, Cadogan Hall
by Aliya Al-Hassan - Feb 11, 2019

At 86, Chita Rivera could easily justify putting her feet up a little. She first performed in London back in 1958 in the iconic role of Anita in West Side Story and has never stopped since. She returned to the capital this weekend for two one-off concerts, chronicling her life and amazing career. The word legend is overused these days, but Rivera can truly justify the title. She has been nominated 10 times for a Tony Award, which is the joint record for number of nominations. In 1984 she starred in The Rink with Liza Minnelli and won her first (of two) Tony Award for her role as Anna and in 2018 she received the Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre.
