BWW Review: South Coast Repertory Raises Hopeful, Exquisite New Production of ONCE
by Michael Quintos - Sep 21, 2017

Though the Tony Award-winning musical adaptation of writer/director John Carney's well-liked indie film Once is a musical that this reviewer has liked quite a bit from past productions, it took seeing South Coast Repertory's brand new regional production---now on stage in Costa Mesa through September 30---for this reviewer to not only like it, but to truly adore it. From casting to staging and everything in between, SCR's enjoyable new mounting, under the astute direction of Kent Nicholson, is somehow much more emotional, thoughtful, and remarkably riveting than past touring productions. And though, yes, it is essentially the same source material, SCR's exquisite new iteration of this small, but genuinely endearing musical is by far the gold standard of how this show should look and feel in any and all future productions. BWW Review: WARCROSS by Marie Lu
by Bonnie Lynn Wagner - Sep 21, 2017

WARCROSS by Marie Lu was the first book to give me a book hangover in 2017. I read an advance copy at the tail end of March, only a fourth of the way into the year, and I was seriously up until after 1 a.m. two worknights in a row devouring this book. IT WAS THAT GOOD. I couldn't put it down!!! I read until my eyes drooped, then woke up in the morning, read some more, crammed some more reading into my lunch break, and stayed up again the next night until I'd finishe (more...)

BWW Review: Broadway's Bart Shatto Belts Out One Showstopper After Another at The Rrazz Room
by Kevin Pollack - Sep 21, 2017

Bart Shatto is a star performer. I first heard Bart with the famed theatrical-rock group The Trans-Siberian Orchestra. He's sung on a couple of their recordings, but toured the country with them for many years, notably singing the songs Old Town Bar seen below. Then I first saw Bart while he played Bud in Marriott Lincolnshire Theatre's fantastic production of The Bridges of Madison County. BWW Review: The Story of THE KOMAGATA MARU INCIDENT Gets Lost in this Underwhelming Production at the Stratford Festival
by Lauren Gienow - Sep 20, 2017

In 1914, hundreds of British subjects of the Sikh faith were not allowed off of the boat they traveled to Canada on, and denied entry at the Vancouver harbour based on xenophobia and racist immigration policies. This story of the people aboard the Komagata Maru is an important part of Canadian history to be remembered and an important story to tell. The story is told on stage this season at the Stratford Festival in THE KOMAGATA MARU INCIDENT written by Sharon Pollock and directed by Keira Loughran. Unfortunately, the choices made in the way the story is told, cause the power of its message to not resonate nearly as much as it should be resonating at a time when it is so incredibly relevant in society.
