Los Altos Stage Company presents the emotional powerhouse musical Next to Normal, an unflinching look at a suburban family struggling with the effects of mental illness. The production runs May 23 - June 23.

Broadway vets Ma-Anne Dionisio (Flower Drum Song) and Louise Pitre (Mamma Mia, Tony Nomination) will appear in the off-Mirvish production of NEXT TO NORMAL, beginning April 26th in Toronto - presented in partnership with The Musical Stage Company who recently presented the professional Toronto premiere of Fun Home.

231 productions presented NEXT TO NORMAL last month at Koppang, Norway. Considering the fact most performers on that stage had next to no (!) experience doing musicals and this was their debut, I was floored. And what a debut it was. Great performances from everyone on stage, wonderful (full) orchestra and inventive direction!

It's definitely not just another day because this week, the Tony Award-winning musical Next to Normal celebrates the tenth anniversary of opening at Broadway's Booth Theatre! The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts today announced its 2019–2020 theater season, with more than 15 productions from New York, London, and across the globe, plus original Kennedy Center productions.

Next To Normal, the Pulitzer and Tony Award winning rock musical, written by Brian Yorkey with music by Tom Kitt, will be presented by Whidbey Island Center for the Arts for a three week run beginning on April 5.

Winner of the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, amongst a plethora of other awards, Next to Normal is the story of Diana Goodman, who lives with bipolar disorder and delusion episodes following the traumatic death of her infant son seventeen years ago and her illnesses' ramifications within her family. Amongst depression, the show tackles a number of serious issues such as drug abuse, modern psychiatry, suicide, and most importantly, what it means to be human; what it means to feel grief, pain, hurt and, on the contrary, to feel loved. It's a musical which deals which intertwines the past, present and future with the human condition in the most insightful, emotionally crippling yet beautiful way and so that it comes with no surprise that many more theatre companies are including in their seasons.

Next to Normal explores how one suburban household copes with crisis and mental illness. Winner of three 2009 Tony Awards, including Best Musical Score and the 2010 Pulitzer Prize, Next to Normal was also chosen as 'one of the year's ten best shows' by critics around the country, including The Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, Rolling Stone and The New York Times.

Performances are scheduled for November 1-3 and 8-10 at 8:00 pm and November 4 at 2 pm.

This year, Bootless Stageworks is using its new home at St. Stephen's Church on Broom Street to re-present shows they had performed in earlier venues. In case you are unfamiliar with it, 'next to normal' is about a suburban family dealing with the effects of mental illness, told through a largely rock score of almost operatic proportions. The show was awarded the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
