Portland Opera Announces 2020/21 Season

Portland Opera has announced programming for the 2020/21 season, which will open on September 11, 2020. The season will launch in the fall with Robert Xavier Rodríguez's Frida, starring soprano Catalina Cuervo in the title role. This will be followed by the company's fall classic opera, Puccini's enduring drama Tosca, in October and November. The season will continue with a double bill of two pieces honoring the lives of Jewish victims of the Holocaust-Grigori Frid's The Diary of Anne Frank and Jake Heggie's For a Look or a Touch-in early 2021. On March 13, the company will present its annual Big Night concert at the Keller Auditorium. The season will close with Giuseppe Verdi's tour de force opera, Il Trovatore, starring Italian soprano Selene Zanetti in her U.S. debut.

This wildly funny satirical farce questions why, in a world of bailed-out banks and overpriced prescription drugs, theft is only a crime when it is committed by those truly in need, centering on humble housewife Antonia (Kaili Hollister) who joins a revolt of women at the local supermarket as they are all hungry and fed up by rising prices and stagnant wages. Determined to live with dignity and rejecting an austere diet of dog food and birdseed which is about all Antonia can afford to buy on her husband Giovvanni's (Jeremie Loncka) wages working on the production line at a local factory, the women's protest escalates and looting ensues.

Teatro Paraguas presents HUMMINGBIRD, an original play by Alix Hudson.  Hummingbird, written by Alix Hudson and directed by Malcom Morgan, takes place in an unspecified first-world country. Nadia (Iza Konings) and Miriam (Christine Armenion) are best friends and seniors in high school; Sam (Devin Zamora) is Nadia's big brother and works at a local factory. Nadia and Miriam are excited about early acceptance into university and the spring dance, and Nadia is vying for salutatorian of her class. After Nadia and Sam's parents are deported for being undocumented immigrants, however, Nadia falls into a coma-like state.

Today, Odyssey Impact has announced its partnership with filmmaker Rudy Valdez to execute a social impact campaign for the award-winning documentary The Sentence. The film showcases firsthand the devastating consequences of mandatory minimum drug sentencing through Valdez's storytelling of his older sister Cindy and their family's experience over 10 years. The Sentence won the Audience Award for U.S. Documentary at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival and earned Valdez an EMMY® at this year's awards for Exceptional Merit in Documentary Filmmaking. Our talented Globe for All company of professional actors will bring a stirring production of William Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale to a variety of economically, geographically, and culturally diverse communities throughout San Diego County. The free-admission Globe for All Tour kicks off on Tuesday, October 29 and will visit 19 Community Partner venues from San Ysidro to Oceanside. Director Daniel Jáquez returns to The Globe to helm this production of The Winter's Tale. His previous work at The Globe includes the 2017 direction and co-creation of the bilingual piece La Muerte Descansa en Paz (Death Rests in Peace), which was presented as part of one of The Old Globe's signature arts engagement programs, coLAB, and he was a participant in this year's The Old Globe Classical Directing Fellowship, led by Erna Finci Viterbi Artistic Director Barry Edelstein.
