In 1785, a tale titled, 'The String of Pearls: A Romance' appeared in a series of Victorian fictions known as 'penny dreadfuls.' A story as gory as they come, the tale was a ghoulish account of a psychopathic barber and his pastry-proficient accomplice turning murder victims into meat pies. Gaining instant popularity among readers, the tale of obsession, vengeance, and deeply questionable pie fillings so captivated the public that the tale of Sweeney Todd was adapted for the stage before the ending had been revealed in print.

Stephen Sondheim's masterpiece Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street arrived at the Skylight Music Theatre last weekend to dazzle audiences with the American songwriter's brilliant, exquisite lyrics and melodies complimented by Hugh Wheeler's book.  A story resurrected from an old three penny publication titled 'String of Pearls' adapted from a 1976 Christopher Bond play retells dark, almost demonic yet ultimately redemptive tale revealing the horrors of revenge and the power of love through this award winning musical with songs such as "Johanna," "Pretty Women," and "By the Sea."

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, the brilliant Tony Award-winning musical thriller by Stephen Sondheim (music and lyrics) and Hugh Wheeler (book), opens at the Don & Ann Brown Theatre on July 14, following a specially priced preview on July 13. This deliciously macabre and witty tale of a throat-slitting barber and his enterprising accomplice, Mrs. Lovett, who grinds his victims into meat pies, runs through August 6. Clive Cholerton directs and Emmanuel Schvartzman, making his PBD debut, is the musical director.

The Lab, which runs through July 30 at the Sundance Resort in Utah, is supervised by Artistic Director Philip Himberg and Producing Director Christopher Hibma, and is the centerpiece of the Institute's year-round work with the theatre community. Lyric Theatre continues its 2017 Season with the Tony- and Pulitzer Prize-winning I AM MY OWN WIFE, a one-man show starring familiar Lyric performer Matthew Alvin Brown. Brown portrays over 30 characters, utilizing a myriad of accents and dialects, to tell the engrossing true story of of a 20th Century antique collector, who also happened to be a communist informant, secret gay nightclub owner, and self-proclaimed transvestite. This story is an important one - especially significant with transgender rights being so politicized at the moment; yet in Brown and Baron's capable hands, a veritably entertaining evening at the theatre … not to be missed.
