You know those cartoons where the little fish is eaten by a bigger fish and then, just when you think everything is going to be fine, that fish is eaten by an even bigger fish? That kind of sums up how Molly Smith Metzler's 2017 play, Cry It Out unfolds in its new production by Apollinaire Theatre Company. The piece begins like a playwright's exercise, juxtaposing two young mothers  from a New York suburb with little in common within the mutual confines of where their baby monitors can still receive signals from their respective nurseries. Through almost-realistic exchanges, we meet Lina, a rowdy, working class woman who has just had a baby boy named Max and Jessie, an upper-middle class corporate lawyer who has just given birth to a baby girl named Allison.

When overwhelmed, we all have different coping mechanisms. Maybe you fall silent, take a nap, or settle into a comforting movie. Christopher, the spectacularly intelligent main character in THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME, precipitously counts prime numbers to self-soothe. Or he collapses to the floor and moans until the stressful event subsides. THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME follows Christopher on his mission to find the person who stabbed his neighbor's dog with a pitchfork after Christopher's found next to the newly deceased canine and accused of the murder. Based on the novel by Mark Haddon and directed by Robert Tolaro, it's the only play I've experienced that opens with a (don't worry, it's fake) dead dog in the middle of the stage. But Christopher's not only dealing with clearing his name. He's also reeling from his mother's recent death as well as preparing to take A-level maths (the play is set in England) in school.

Tony Award winner Nikki M. James (The Book of Mormon) sat down with Ilana and shared stories of growing up in a small suburb in New Jersey and feeling like no one else looked like her and how the unexpected reaction to a solo she sang in kindergarten changed her life forever . Nikki opens up about how the loss of her father changed her so deeply at a very young age and that time she was in London and got a call asking if she might be able to take over in the London production of Mormon -that night- even though she had been out of the Broadway production for quite a while. This is an actress who takes on huge challenges and never stops working on her craft.

ARTIFICATION brings The State Against Mandela & The Others, a documentary by Nicolas Champeaux and Gilles Porte, to cinemas nationwide starting with a run at the IFC Center in New York, 30 years after the release of Nelson Mandela from prison. The film takes audiences to the courtroom for the 1963-1964 trial which resulted in his imprisonment, allowing them to hear the recently restored audio of the court proceedings against the late ANC leader and his eight lesser-known codefendants — men who boldly turned the tables, putting the Apartheid system itself on trial at risk of the death penalty. Hauntingly powerful illustrations by OERD (Oerd van Cuijlenborg) bring the recorded words of the judge and accused to life while shining the spotlight on those who stood with Madiba but were largely relegated to the shadows of history. The film opens on February 19 for a one-week run during Black History Month followed by an expansion into other markets thereafter.
