Filled with high-energy music and dancing and a lively, eager-to-please spirit embedded in its DNA, this brand-new Southern California regional theater production of NEWSIES---which continues performances at the La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts through June 24---is a wonderfully caffeinated jolt of a stage show, highlighted by a remarkably talented and athletically-blessed ensemble that leaps and belts one show stopping number after another. The 72nd Annual Tony Awards are this Sunday June 10th at 8/9c hosted by Josh Groban and Sara Bareilles. It's the biggest award show of the Broadway season and it closes out a long awards season for Broadway and Off-Broadway musicals and plays. We can't help but wonder what chances this year's Best Musical and Best Play nominees have of taking home the ultimate prize...

There is good news at the Rose Theatre! NEWSIES The Broadway Musical opened on June 1 running through the 17th. BRAVO! I am extra sold on this show.

New Dramatists, Tony® Honor recipient and the nation's premier playwright development laboratory, just honored Tony®and Academy Award-winner Denzel Washington at its 69th Annual Spring Luncheon tribute. Washington, currently starring on Broadway in The Iceman Cometh, directed by George C. Wolfe, received New Dramatists' 2018 Distinguished Achievement Award. Tributes to Mr. Washington and performances were presented by three-time Grammy Award-winner Branford Marsalis with bassist Noah Jackson, Tony®Award-winners George C. Wolfe and Stephen McKinley Henderson, Constanza Romero (August Wilson Estate), and Pulitzer Prize finalist and New Dramatists resident playwright Kristoffer Diaz (The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity).

Broadway Sacramento announced the 2018 - 19 Broadway On Tour season at the Community Center Theater, sponsored by Wells Fargo, featuring four shows not previously presented in the series and three that are favorites of Broadway Sacramento audiences. The 16th Annual Garden State Film Festival is thrilled to welcome award-winning veteran actor Christopher Lloyd to their spectacular four-day 16th Anniversary event in Asbury Park this year from March 22-25th! The Outre Theatre Company announces the East Coast premiere of Reservoir Dolls, inspired by Quentin Tarantino's film and adapted by Erika Soerensen. This reimagining of the classic 1992 indie film recasts its characters as women, examining how our culture treats violence differently depending on the gender of the perpetrator. Outre's production is also the first time that the production has been directed by a woman, in this case Assistant Artistic Director Shannon Ouellette. The musical THE BODYGUARD is based on the 1992 film of the same name, which is best known for Whitney Houston's cover of the song I Will Always Love You . It's rather telling that that movie is best known for a song, and that seems to have been the impetus behind relaunching as a musical. This stage version follows the plot of the movie loosely--a famous singer has a stalker which requires hiring a more disciplined bodyguard, danger and romance ensue; but the stage version relies much more on vocal talents than acting. The casting of Grammy award winner Deborah Cox is a clear signal that this is much more music focused than plot driven, but even so, walking the line between concert and musical doesn't come easy for this production, even though the performances are largely quite satisfying.
