BWW Review: LITTLE BLACK DRESS at Habima Theatre - These Girls Are On Fire And We're Feeling Good!
by Yuval Gerstner - Mar 21, 2017

A group of women go on stage wearing white bathrobes and start singing Natural Woman. They slowly begin to remove their bathrobes… only to reveal little black dresses underneath. This act pretty much symbolizes the entire show: A presentation of womanhood in all its aspects. This English On Stage production gives us 70 minutes of some of the world's greatest hits by Adele, Aretha Franklin, Beyoncé, Kate Bush (and more) performed by four talented women and two male musicians, but this is more than just a cover show. It is a cabaret-like musical event for women to celebrate themselves through music in a women's empowerment environment.

Artistic Director and Choreographer Adrianna Thompson seeks to engage audiences in a study of two eras, the 1920s and the present. Dance Mission Theatre transforms into a time machine, transporting us back to the 1920s. Glitz and glam sparkle from the dingy corners of a speakeasy. Raucous jazz blares, bringing bejeweled and sequined dancing flapper girls to life. An evening of indulgence has begun. The entry notes of Prince's 'Erotic City' ring in your ears, an echo from another time. Suddenly you notice the writing on the wall. The crash of overindulgence is imminent.

BWW Review: Humanity's Heartbreak Revealed at OTW's Tragic WOMEN OF TROY
by Peggy Sue Dunigan - Feb 23, 2017

In a play more than 2000 years old written by Euripides titled The Trojan Women, Dale Gutzman's Off the Wall Theater (OTW) reimagines their Women of Troy set in the 1920's. Gutzman worked several years to adapt the play inspired by a Don Taylor translation revealing the aftermath of the infamous Trojan War through a women's eyes, the prisoners and refugees shipped to another city. These were the women who survived when their brothers, fathers, husbands and sons were slaughtered by the Athenians, after the legendary Trojan horse 'birthed blood' that flowed into Troy's streets.

BWW Review: THE GREAT GATSBY Brings Iconic Characters to Life at the Orlando Shakes!
by Kelli McGurk - Feb 14, 2017

Gatsby? What Gatsby? When you hear this charming protagonist's name, what images flash through your head?  Lavish parties dripping with elegance?  An atmosphere of abandoned care filled to the ceiling with social climbers?  Pearls, fringe, and feathers that drape over the silhouettes of dancing women?  Smoke and mirrors that orchestrate a timeless vortex of pure magic?  'The Great Gatsby' has extended beyond the realm of high school reading curriculum, and has become an iconic entity synonymous with the 1920's.  The 1925 novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald has inspired certain adaptations including ballets, television episodes of popular shows, computer games, and most famously the 2013 film adaptation starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, and Tobey Maguire.  The Orlando Shakepeare Theater continues this legacy with their production of the stage adaptation by Simon Levy which opened on February 8th.
