The 2017-2018 Broadway in Wilmington series at The Playhouse on Rodney Square was announced today at a special launch event. The Broadway Series, the third season under the management of The Grand Opera House, includes four week-long productions, THE WIZARD OF OZ, CABARET, DIRTY DANCING: THE CLASSIC STORY LIVE ON STAGE, and MOTOWN THE MUSICAL. In addition, the schedule includes two limited-engagements, THE ILLUSIONISTS: LIVE FROM BROADWAY and DANCE TO THE MOVIES.

Something's wrong when a tertiary character with no name upstages your main character. Sometimes it can make a production more memorable, but in Theatre Schmeater's current production of 'My Man Godfrey', the nameless mediator embraced the melodrama of the production and went over the top deliciously. This person, Danny Herter, set the bar very high for the level of pomp and circumstance that some of the flighty aristocrats just did not match. Granted, the bulk of the cast did a good job making the characters into caricatures--Sarah Karnes' whiney Irene Bullock; Lantz Wagner as the mooching eccentric, Carlo; and Teri Lazzara's ditzy Angelica Bullock, to name a few (more on that later)--but I wish director Doug Staley pointed to Danny Herter, with his Martin Short as the Mad Hatter voice, and encouraged the less flamboyant members of the cast to peacock a bit more in this tale of scatterbrained socialites.

Broadway fans had plenty of reasons to celebrate this year, with dozens of shows having opened since January, hundreds of actors having made their debuts, and many more having returned to the stage for critically acclaimed performances. Not all news was good though, as we also suffered a loss of an incredible amount of talent.

If you are even a semi-regular reader of this column of reviews, you know that about every three or four months, I post a compilation of observations of shows from the previous quarter of the year. This cabaret critiquing mash up happens for a number of reasons, not the least of which is that I admittedly see too many cabaret shows for the amount of time I have to promptly review them (and then, of course, the usual writer's procrastination sets in). So I have to prioritize the timeliness of the reviews based on the prestige of the performer, the length of a show run, the strength (or lack thereof) of the performance, etc. The quality of the shows in these compilations—which can range from a half dozen to a dozen reviews in one shot—are usually a mixed bag of outright raves, qualified positives, and constructive pans (I'm not a fan of the word “negative” in the reviewer lexicon). With that in mind here are a collection of cabaret show reviews going back to the start of a very harsh winter.
The critically acclaimed Brits Off Broadway festival, host to the UK's most innovative and provocative theater in New York City, returns for its 9th season of New York premieres of new British theater. The Orange County Performing Arts Center's Free or All series continues this summer with the enormously popular and eagerly awaited return of free Movie Mondays on the community plaza.
