The Personal History of David Copperfield leads the list of nominations for the 2019 British Independent Film Awards (BIFAs), announced this morning by British actors Naomi Ackie and Joe Cole at the Regent Street Cinema. Armando Iannucci's fresh take on Dickens' novel about the ups and downs in the life of its eponymous character is recognised for Best British Independent Film and Best Screenplay sponsored by BBC Films, amongst nine other awards. Dev Patel is nominated for Best Actor, with co-stars Tilda Swinton and Hugh Laurie competing in the respective Supporting categories. Frantic Assembly today announced the full casting for I Think We Are Alone, a major new play by Sally Abbott (The Coroner, Vera), co-directed by Kathy Burke (Lady Windermere's Fan, The Retreat) and Scott Graham (Fatherland, Things I Know to be True). The work will premiere at Theatre Royal Plymouth on 3rd February and tour to venues including Theatre Royal Stratford East, The Lowry, Nuffield Southampton, Bristol Old Vic, and Leicester's Curve in Spring 2020. The production sits at the centre of a year of programming celebrating 25 years of Frantic Assembly.

The Big Easy Award-winning theatre company, See 'Em On Stage ('Lizzie'-Best Musical 2016), presents CABARET (1998 Version) with music and lyrics by John Kander and Fred Ebb and book by Joe Masteroff. 'Cabaret' is based on the true stories of Christopher Isherwood which he documented in his book 'Goodbye to Berlin'. 'Cabaret' made its Broadway debut in 1966 before becoming a 1972 Oscar-winning movie starring Liza Minnelli. In 1998, 'Cabaret' returned to Broadway in the Tony Award-winning production starring Alan Cumming. This production uses the script and score from that version.

Nick Bowling directs Lionel Bart's OLIVER!, the 1960 musical based on Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist. With music direction by Ryan T. Nelson and choreography by Brenda Didier, a talented cast of child and adult actors delivers Bart's eminently hummable, if not groundbreaking, tunes. Though certain aspects of the material are irremediably dated, this is an entertaining revival of a (mostly) family-friendly show.
