Mary Poppins - 2006 - Broadway History , Info & More

New Amsterdam Theatre (Broadway)
214 West 42nd St. New York, NY

Mary Poppins has arrived at Broadway's magnificent New Amsterdam Theatre in a new musical so extraordinarily enchanting that, like critics, you'll have just one word for it: Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!

Based on P.I. Travers' cherished stories and the classic 1964 Walt Disney film, MARY POPPINS, currently one of London's biggest sensations, features the Sherman brothers' original Academy Award-winning songs. In collaboration with Cameron Mackintosh, the show has been created by Academy Award-winning screenwriter Julian Fellowes, who has written the book, and the Olivier Award-winning team of George Stiles and Anthony Drewe, who have composed new songs and additional music and lyrics.

Olivier Award-winning director Richard Lyre leads a dream team of vision and stagecraft, bringing to life the story of the Banks family and their magical nanny. Co-direction and choreography is by Olivier Award-winner Matthew Bourne, set and costume design is by Tony Award winner Bob Crowley, co-choreography is by Olivier Award-winner Stephen Mear, and lighting design is by Olivier Award-winner Howard Harrison.

MARY POPPINS marks the first collaboration between Disney, producer of such acclaimed productions as THE LION KING, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST and TARZAN, and Cameron Mackintosh, legendary producer of record-breaking shows THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, CATS and LES MISERABLES.

BWW Reviews: Peabody Opera House Presents Charming Production of MARY POPPINS
by Chris Gibson - May 9, 2012

The touring production of MARY POPPINS that's currently gracing the stage of the Peabody Opera House is "practically perfect", featuring eye-popping special effects, a glorious set, and terrific performances that manage to capture the spirit of the 1964 Disney film, as well as the P.L. Travers books that inspired it. While some of the more beloved elements from the movie are noticeably absent, they've been replaced with sequences that are every bit as magical and engaging. Though the staging is a bit cramped, this is a spectacular show that appeals to both children and adults. And, I should know because I brought along my six-year old son, and he loved it.

BWW Reviews: Disney Theatricals and Cameron Mackintosh Re-imagine MARY POPPINS from Page to Screen to Stage
by Veronica Bruscini - February 13, 2012

Chimney sweeps dance, artwork comes alive and, ultimately, Mary Poppins' influence restores the fraying family ties between Mr. and Mrs. Banks and their two children. Yet theatergoers expecting a close interpretation of Disney's classic 1964 film will find little familiar territory in the onstage production of Mary Poppins. The show's creators certainly reference the movie in the costumes and sets and, more notably, by incorporating many of the film's most popular songs. However, the children's interactions and adventures with their "practically perfect" nanny primarily reflect stories included in the original Mary Poppins book series by P.L. Travers.
