Circus is an exhibition presenting a selection of art works created for and used to accompany the performances of Hiroshi Koike and Pappa Tarahumara from 1982 to 2012. Works exhibited include masks, costumes, stage properties both large and small. The production of these pieces involved many leading artists from Japan and Indonesia, such as Kenji Yanobe, Kaoru Kasai, Hiroharu Hamai, outsect, Hiroyuki Moriwaki, I Wayan Tangguh, Makoto Matsushima, and Jompet Kuswidananto.

This exhibition is a memory exhibition on footsteps of Hiroshi Koike and Pappa Tarahumara for the past 30 years. It is also a presentation of an amazing aesthetic exploration that transcends time and space. We are invited to enjoy the objects that move between dreamworlds and our daily life, between fairytales and reality; these diverse manifestations provide us with humor as well as horror.

Hiroshi Koike established Pappa Tarahumara in 1982, involving dance, theater, art, and music in each of their performances. After 30 years, their creative journey finally came to an end when Koike disbanded the troupe on 31 May 2012. In June 2012, he founded the Hiroshi Koike Bridge Project, with a wider creative range than Pappa Tarahumara.

This exhibition is made possible through the kind support of The Japan Foundation.
