The Oregon Trail in Broadway THE OREGON TRAIL
Portland Center Stage at The Armory
10/29-11/20/2016
You have died of dysentery! For those who grew up playing “The Oregon Trail” computer game, dysentery was serious business. In this fresh and funny retelling of our history, two Janes traverse The Oregon Trail. “Now Jane” is playing the computer game in 1997; “Then Jane” is in a covered wagon in 1848. A judgey game show narrator, a domineering sister and two oxen try to corral the two Janes. Fate maneuvers them both to a conclusion that changes their lives and sends them to the end of the trail.

Reborning in Broadway REBORNING
Beirut Wedding World Theatre Project
10/28-11/20/2016
Beirut Wedding World Theatre Project presents Reborning by Zayd Dohrn, a dark comedy about a troubled young artist who makes baby dolls that look like real babies. The definition of art, how we deal with loss and the mystery of creation are also subjects of this tight, well-constructed, three person dark comedy. How do we heal from loss? What is the engine of art? How does a woman own her life in the 21st century? Who owns any given work of art, the artist or the audience? None of these questions are answered in this play, but all of them and more are confronted and explored. This play doesn’t fall into easy labels or categories. This work of art is being produced by the Beirut Wedding World Theatre Project, the brain child of Bobby Bermea and Jamie M. Rea. Bermea and Rea seek to create theatre that challenges the dominant cultural paradigm in order to create a more tolerant, expansive and celebratory philosophy. Tiffany Groben, who stars as Kelly, brought Beirut Wedding the script and is one of the up-and-coming young stars in the Portland theatre scene.

School of Rock, the Musical in Broadway SCHOOL OF ROCK, THE MUSICAL
STAGES Performing Arts Youth Academy
11/4-11/20/2016
As the story goes, down-on-his-luck wannabe rock star Dewey Finn poses as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school to make ends meet. When he discovers his students’ musical talents, he enlists his fifth-graders to form a rock group and conquer the Battle of the Bands. He turns a class of straight-A students into a guitar-shredding, bass-slapping, mind-blowing rock band. While teaching these pint-sized prodigies what it means to truly rock, Dewey falls for the school’s beautiful, but uptight headmistress, helping her rediscover the wild child within. Based on the smash hit 2003 film of the same title, School of Rock features classic hits as well as brand new music written by Broadway legend Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Glenn Slater,

A Civil War Christmas: An American Musical Celebration in Broadway A CIVIL WAR CHRISTMAS: AN AMERICAN MUSICAL CELEBRATION
Artists Repertory Theatre
11/22-12/23/2016
Set during a time when the country is divided by conflicting ideologies and convictions following a contentious presidential election, Vogel’s sweeping, music-rich story plays out one frigid Christmas Eve on the banks of the Potomac River. Amid the hubbub of holiday preparations, an array of abolitionists and assassins, slaves and freemen, Union and Confederate soldiers, along with President Lincoln and Mary Todd, all pursue their paths to liberation. Propelled by traditional American songs, marches and spirituals — all revitalized for this production by luminary Portland musicians — A Civil War Christmas is a lively reminder for people of all beliefs about humanity’s potential for compassion, reconciliation and hope.
