  3. Brian Friel's "Lovers"

One of his most memorable pieces, Brian Friel's "Lovers" is a two-part tale of love, laughter and loss.

"Winners" introduces Joseph Michael Brennan (Joe) and Margaret Mary Enright (Mag), a young, teenage couple, in 1960’s Ireland, who are expecting a baby. As a result, they are soon to be married. They have also been asked to leave school as this was a major scandal in Ireland at the time. As the play opens, they are preparing to spend the day revising for their final school exams on the top of Ardnageeha, which overlooks the town of Ballymore. Mag cannot (and really does not want to) concentrate, and tries to distract Joe into more deep and meaningful conversation about the future. Set atop this hill, overlooking the community below as they go about their daily routine, the young couple discuss, distract, ignore and bicker amongst themselves, between a sinister pair of dispassionate commentators who flesh out the story and shroud the scene with a sense of foreboding. Friel cleverly draws in the audience through “innocent” banter that probes and develops, unconscious of what lies ahead for these two lovers…

In “Losers”, we meet Hanna and Andy, a recently married, if somewhat unhappy, couple. Set in a typical inner city terrace in 1960’s Ireland, we are guided through their difficulty in conducting a relationship under the watchful, pious eye of Hanna's mother, Mrs Wilson, and her bedside bell... In this darkly comedic exploration of marriage, commitment and intimacy, Andy faces the challenges presented by Mrs. Wilson (the dependent in-law), Cissy (the even more pious next door neighbour) and an uncertain wife, Hannah. Written to compliment “Winners”, Brian Friel portrays them in a loveless marriage, in an Ireland where open passion, separation or divorces were not socially or religiously acceptable. “Losers” is a somewhat grim outlook of what it means to love another.
