However, Houston Ballet is pleased to report that select performances of fall programming have been rescheduled at THE HOBBY CENTER - SAROFIM HALL. Originally premiering on February 14, 1978 at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden by the Royal Ballet, Mayerling also had a triumphant American premiere in Los Angeles that same year and was the subject of a London Weekend Television film, winning the 1978 music category of the prestigious Prix Italia - the first ballet to do so. The Joyce Theater's Ballet Festival, continuing through July 29, 2017, is an opportunity for young dance groups to perform at this venue. On Wednesday evening, July 26th, I saw Gemma Bond Dance. Choreographer Gemma Bond is a member of American Ballet Theatre, as are her sixteen dancers. Bond, born in Bedfordshire, England, got her first taste of choreography at 13 when she competed in the Royal Ballet's (where she trained) Sir Kenneth Macmillan Choreographic Competition. From 2010 to the present, she has created new pieces for ABT's Choreographic Company as well as for other companies and competitions. (more...)

San Francisco Ballet announces ten promotions, eight new Company members, and six apprentices for the 2017-18 Season. Soloist Jennifer Stahl has been promoted to principal dancer, and Isabella DeVivo, Jahna Frantziskonis, Esteban Hernandez, and Steven Morse have been promoted to soloist. In addition, SF Ballet Apprentices Alexandre Cagnat, Shene Lazarus, Davide Occhipinti, Nathaniel Remez, and Isabella Walsh have been promoted to the corps de ballet. Ulrik Birkkjaer and Ana Sophia Scheller join the Company as principal dancers and Solomon Golding, Gabriela Gonzalez, Blake Johnston, Madison Keesler, Wona Park, and Joseph Warton have joined SF Ballet as corps de ballet members. Ethan Chudnow, Anatalia Hordov, Carmela Mayo, Swane Messaoudi, Larisa Nugent, and Benjamin Pearson of San Francisco Ballet School have been promoted to the rank of apprentice. (more...)
