BWW Review: Well-Conceived BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY at Lakeland Civic Theatre
by Roy Berko - Feb 21, 2017

BWW Review: Delightful THE LITTLE MERMAID at Beck Center

One of the difficulties of doing the Disney Theatrical, The Little Mermaid, is how to do the underwater scenes. Yes, much of the story of Ariel, the daughter of King Triton, the master of the sea, in her search for 'a world in which I feel truly realized in my own terms,' takes place, as the songs states, 'Under the Sea,' in contrast to 'The World Above.' What is the longest running musical in New York City history? No, it's not PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, CHICAGO or THE LION KING. It's that little musical, THE FANTASTICKS, with book and lyrics by Tom Jones and music by Harvey Schmidt. It's been on the boards in Manhattan for over 56 years. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Funky, Fun, HIGH FIDELITY, A MUSICAL at Blank Canvas
by Roy Berko - Dec 9, 2014

Pat Ciamacco, artistic director at Blank Canvas, has a 'thing' for off-beat musicals. Sure, he produced 'Hair' and 'Godspell,' but it's more likely that what you'll see mounted on his stage are 'Beach Blanket Party,' 'Debbie Does Dallas,' and 'Texas Chainsaw Musical.' I'm surprised he's missed out on 'Bullshot Crummond,' 'Dance of the Vampires,' 'Expresso Bongo,' 'Hands on a Hard Body, and, of course, 'The Rocky Horror Show.' (more...)

BWW Reviews: 'Alas For You,' GODSPELL at Blank Canvas
by Roy Berko - Dec 11, 2013

GODSPELL is one of the biggest musical theatrical successes of all-time. Based on the 'Gospel According to St. Matthew,' the musical tells the story of the last seven days of Christ's life. The parables have been contemporized, and Christ's followers are free spirits who sing the likes of 'Day By Day', 'All Good Gifts', and 'Turn Back, O Man. (more...)
