Building on 40 years of producing powerful contemporary theatre, Studio Theatre is pleased to announce a new class of commissioned playwrights and directors to Studio R&D, its incubator to support the creation of new work from inception to first production. Incoming Studio R&D artists are playwrights James Fritz, James Ijames, Steph Del Rosso, and Emily Schwend, as well as directors Carl Cofield, Lila Neugebauer, and Eric Ruffin. These exciting talents from the US and UK will have Studio's full support in creating aesthetically diverse new work to be presented in future seasons and introduced into the international repertoire. As they create Studio-specific works, commissioned artists will visit Studio to get to know its theatres, programming, and audiences in person. (more...)

Colt Coeur and WP Theater announce the programming for the annual Parity Plays Festival reading series, which celebrates the work of female and trans playwrights and directors. The festival will consist of four plays by Kate Cortesi, Obehi Janice, Lily Padilla, and WP Lab alum Sylvia Khoury. After an unfortunate "failure to launch" mishap, Loading Dock Theatre announces that Leegrid Steven's Spaceman has once again been cleared for take-off and will launch into the Off-Broadway stratosphere beginning February 2019. This news comes after the originally scheduled debut was forced to close after only one preview when leading lady Erin Treadway suffered a substantial fall that left her with serious fractures to both arms and left wrist. A group of friends bond at a bar on Christmas Eve and share their childhood fears of the Krampus, a real figure from Norse mythology who was a demonic companion to Santa Claus. Directed by Michael LoPorto, who founded D3C with Gracia, the darkly funny show features original music in the form of bawdy holiday carols. Endless life and death scenarios, surging stress-levels, super-charged power dynamics and noble heroes in pristine white coats: we could fill waiting rooms with all the reasons why medicine is one of the most reliable modern storytelling backdrops. Take General Hospital, House, Grey's Anatomy, and more recently, New Amsterdam and The Good Doctor as evidence. It's surprising that a show like Medicine the Musical, written by Michael Ehrenreich and directed by Joey Murray, hasn't already claimed the gaping hospital-shaped space waiting on the Broadway stage (and no, that one musical episode of Scrubs doesn't count). But despite impressive performances from its cast, band, and production team at HERE Arts Center, this rock musical will need some serious re-writing if it hopes to fill it. (more...)
