Returning to BAM for a fourth year, the beauty, complexity, and diversity of Arab culture takes center stage in Contemporary Arab Cinema. Featuring stories of unlikely female friendship in Morocco, forbidden romance in Saudi Arabia, and political defiance in Algeria, this series of vital new works from the Middle East and North Africa's boldest filmmakers is curated by Lina Matta.

Showcasing a variety of art forms, ranging from murals and sculpture to processional puppetry and mobile drag performances, the series will enliven and connect the area's public spaces, increase access to free cultural programming, and support the creative community at a critical moment in the city's history.

Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) celebrates the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. To sustain the tradition while venues around the world remain closed, BAM will launch events virtually, connecting communities across the nation.

Ballet Hispánico will be featured as part of Capital One City Parks Foundation SummerStage Anywhere on Sunday, August 30 at 2pm ET. They will air an excerpt of Línea Recta, choreographed by Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, on SummerStage's Instagram Live.

The de Blasio Administration today announced the launch of the IDNYC renewal campaign, new and returning benefit partners, and the IDNYC Middle School Card. With the fifth anniversary of the IDNYC program approaching and the first set of cards set to expire beginning in January 2020, the program has also introduced a new card design and a comprehensive, citywide advertising and targeted outreach campaign to promote renewals. IDNYC is the largest and most successful municipal ID program in the country with over 1.3 million cardholders.

City Parks Foundation, in partnership with iStar, are thrilled to announce that Capital One City Parks Foundation SummerStage is returning to the Ford Amphitheater at Coney Island Boardwalk in Brooklyn this summer for six free concerts between June and August.

Yesterday, The Christopher Wallace Memorial Foundation, in partnership with the office of Majority Leader Laurie A. Cumbo, hosted the official event celebrating the street co-naming of Christopher “Notorious B.I.G.” Wallace Way, located at the intersection of St. James Place and Fulton Street in Brooklyn, where the late rapper was born and raised. The event commemorated the life and legacy of the legendary Notorious B.I.G., and his impact on music as one of the greatest and most influential rappers of all time. Hundreds of fans showed up to witness this historic moment, joining Biggie's closest family and friends in celebration. 

Dancewave, a Brooklyn-based dance education organization championing accessibility to arts education for all, opens its doors at the New Dancewave Center at 182 4th Avenue in June 2019. After nearly 25 years of groundbreaking work in the dance education field, Dancewave marks this historic event with a Ribbon Cutting ceremony opening the doors of the new Dancewave Center on Friday June 7th, 2019 at 9:00am and a full day of GO (Grand Opening) free community dance classes and live performances for the public on Saturday June 8th, kicking off a month-long celebration.

Today, the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs (DCLA) and women.nyc (NYCEDC) announced that artist team Amanda Williams and Olalekan Jeyifous has been selected to design a new monument honoring Shirley Chisholm, the first black woman elected to serve in Congress. The design proposed by the artists, called Our Destiny, Our Democracy, was selected through the City's Percent for Art program, and will now be refined as it proceeds through additional community input and public review. The monument is the first to be commissioned as part of the She Built NYC program, which seeks to expand representation of women in the City's public art collection. The Shirley Chisolm monument will be installed in Prospect Park by the end of 2020.

As part of the string quartet's 20th anniversary season, ETHEL returns to BAM with Circus: Wandering City, a multimedia musical journey into the history of the iconic Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus that explores and honors the complex relationship between circus troupes, their performers, and the audiences they inspired.

International Public Television Coming to Brooklyn, NY; First Time Anyplace in New York State. INPUT 2018 will take place in Brooklyn, NY, April 30 to May 4, 2018. Hosted by Forest Creatures Foundation with co-hosts Brooklyn College and WNET, this will be the first time the International Public Television conference will convene anyplace in New York State and the seventh time in its forty two year history that it will be in the United States. This conference of public media professionals takes place at a different location around the world each year. The last time INPUT took place in the United States was May 2005 in San Francisco. Joining Leonard Merrill Kurz, President, Forest Creatures Foundation at the Opening Reception on April 30 at Weylin in the Williamsburg district of Brooklyn will be Neal Shapiro of WNET, a special presentation from Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams' office proclaiming that week International Pubic Television week in Brooklyn, a welcome from Jonathan Barzilay, COO of PBS, a keynote address from Amy Goodman of Democracy Now, music from the Brooklyn Youth Chorus, and Jen Chapin, and more. The primary event of all INPUTs is three screening rooms of public television programming from around the world. INPUT 2018, being in New York City (specifically Brooklyn), will have some special additions. Special events include a Commissioning Editors Luncheon where delegates will have the opportunity to dine in small groups with pubic television production decision makers, a lunch panel with the senior producer of the acclaimed PBS series NOVA, a presentation on diversity in US public television, and more. The primary venue for the screenings will be Williamsburg Cinemas. INPUT 2018 is open to all professionals involved with public media. Joseph V. Melillo, executive producer of the Brooklyn Academy of Music, today announced programming for the BAM 2018 Winter/Spring Season. The season runs from January 15 through June 23 and includes theater, dance, music, and other live events in the BAM Howard Gilman Opera House, BAM Harvey Theater, and BAM Fisher. Coney Island History Project has just announced the debut of the Coney Island History Project's new multilingual brochure representing their organization's cultural activities in 10 languages - Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, English, Haitian Creole, Hebrew, Korean, Russian, Spanish and Urdu. The languages selected are among the top ones spoken by ELLS (English Language Learners) in New York City schools.
