Attending the opening performance of Kander & Ebb’s Cabaret at the award winning Barrington Stage Company Sunday took on an added degree of darkness for me because of the current political situation in our country.  

After 28 Seasons Julianne Boyd, co-founder and Artistic Director at Barrington Stage Company, passed a brightly burning torch and retired at the end of the 2022 season. Marc Savitt, sat down with Boyd to gather some information and insight into Boyd, her experiences, and her undeniable impact on the state of the arts in the region.

ALL OF ME is all kinds of good. Not good for a show about a particular group or type of people, it’s just good. There is some aspect that should fit or tickle the funny bone for just about everyone. So, as the song with the same title asks: why not take ALL OF ME?

As we filed out of the theatre following the performance of the World Premiere Musical, A CROSSING, I leaned in toward BSC Artistic Director Julianne Boyd and said, “I am torn between two words - magnificent and gorgeous”. She replied, “I will take them both”, and I assure you deservedly so.

Sharing details regarding the plot would be a disservice to the piece and those who will accept my encouragement to experience it for themselves. During the roughly 90 minutes (with no intermission) the pair of skillful actors present two broadly disparate seeming individuals mostly in a series of impressive and moving monologues.

Barrington Stage Company has been presenting award winning theatre in downtown Pittsfield for more than a quarter century. The thought of not producing during the pandemic was unacceptable to BSC Artistic Director, Julianne Boyd, board members and staffers. They went to extraordinary lengths to present a highly irregular and relatively limited number of offerings.

“Who knew when we started our 10x10 New Play Festival ten years ago that it would become one of our most popular events of the year?” said Artistic Director Julianne Boyd. “We started with two weeks of performances and as of last year, we ran our 10x10 Plays for one month in the middle of the winter.'

Barrington Stage Company has announced casting for the 10-minute plays for the 10th Annual 10X10 New Play Festival, part of the 2021 10X10 Upstreet Arts Festival. BSC’s 10X10 New Play Festival will be filmed live on the Boyd-Quinson Mainstage with no live audience and will stream by demand March 11–14 & 18–21, 2021.

 Barrington Stage Company will present BSC’s Holiday Getaway, a virtual concert starring Alan H. Green, Alysha Umphress, and Joel Waggoner. 

Barrington Stage Company has announced the 2020 Associate Artists – lighting designer David Lander, director/choreographer Jeffrey Page and actress Alysha Umphress. The Associate Artists program’s honorees include choreographer Joshua Bergasse, director Joe Calarco, costume designer Jen Caprio, and more.

Barrington Stage Company will present a virtual reading of Eleanor, a new play about Eleanor Roosevelt, by BSC Associate Artist Mark St. Germain and starring Tony Award winner Harriet Harris (BSC's The Royal Family of Broadway, Sweeney Todd; Broadway's Thoroughly Modern Millie, Rodgers + Hammerstein's Cinderella).

the audience was sincerely and repeatedly thanked for the opportunity to share music that is a?oejust not the same as sitting at homea??. Smiles on the masked faces as the sun set and many were no doubt whistling a happy tune as they returned to their cars suggested that although there are most certainly changes and differences, THE HILLS ARE (still) ALIVE WITH RODGERS & HAMMERSTEIN.

Barrington Stage Company (BSC), under the leadership of Founder/Artistic Director Julianne Boyd, continues its 2020 season with performances beginning tonight for the concert, The Hills Are Alive with Rodgers & Hammerstein. Additional performances have been added to the 2020 season.

Barrington Stage Company is only one of two theater companies in the entire country that has been given the greenlight by Actors' Equity Association to begin staging performances in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Barrington Stage Company will be changing two of the season's productions in order to better meet social distancing protocols that are necessary at this time.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Barrington Stage Company has postponed the previously announced 2020 season until 2021. They have, however, come up with an a?oealternate seasona?? that honors live theatre and allows for gathering safely. BSC has devised a plan which follows Social Distancing guidelines to ensure the safety of audience members, employees, and performers alike.

Barrington Stage Company will produce a reduced and reprogrammed 2020 season starting in August, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.   

Like so many of her performer friends, Ann has had numerous cancelled concerts and her live performance career is totally on hold. While distressing financially, it is also a wonderful opportunity to be useful during this challenging time.
